The first of its kind in Canada, our 2 year Human Resource Diploma program leads with a focus on applied, real-world experience, entrepreneurial thinking, and strong communication skills, which means you'll graduate job-ready. Explore your passion, and the roles and responsibilities of HR through a full-semester work placement, working in a fully functioning HR department, mentored by an HR Professional. Find out from our grads how their work placements and studies have led to employment across a range of industries and organizations.

Full Semester Placement:

In your final semester you will be placed in a fully functioning HR Department with a Public, Private or Not-for-Profit sector employer, immersing yourself in the day-to-day activities, 3 days per week, mentored by an HR Professional.

Pursue Your CHRP Designation:

The nine courses required for the CHRP, Certified Human Resources Professional, designation, approved by the Human Resources Professionals Association are included in your studies. Students who opt to pursue the designation are well prepared to write the Knowledge and Law challenge exams.

2 + 2 Agreement with Trent University:

Upon completion of the two-year Diploma, students maintaining a 75% grade average can direct enter into the third year of the Bachelor of Business Administration or Bachelor of Business Administration with a Specialization in Human Resources Degree Programs at Trent University. With four years of study, students earn six years of credentialing with Fleming’s two-year Human Resources Diploma and Trent’s four-year Business Administration Degree.

  • Faculty teaching the core HR courses have extensive HR experience. Many hold the HRPA's Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designation
  • Hands-on, industry-specific simulations that equip students with real world HR experiences including:
    • Access to HR Live’s HRIS, courtesy of our industry partner Savino Human Resources Partners , preparing you for the digital aspect of Human Resources
    • Participation in the recruitment process: reviewing resumes, conducting employment interviews and making a job offer
    • Developing and delivering a training program for a corporate environment
    • Managing a workplace injury and return to work claim
    • Completing job analysis & formulating job descriptions
    • Collective bargaining negotiations
    • Creating a compensation plan including preparing a job evaluation system and determining pay rates

In their second year, students are encouraged to join the association, which leads to networking opportunities with HR Professionals and the ability to be mentored by an experienced HR Professional who has extensive experience in the field. Our well-established partnership with the Peterborough Chapter of the HRPA offers student centered events periodically throughout the year.

Approximately $1,000 per year for books and supplies.

  • Participate in the recruitment, selection, and retention of employees.

Students applying to Business - Human Resources must meet the following requirements:

  • OSSD including Gr 12 C English and Gr 11 C Math

Recommended (but not required for admission)

Other program requirements:

  • Students are encouraged to join the Peterborough Chapter of the HRPA. This experience provides valuable networking opportunities for mentorships and future employment.

Joanne Tully BA, CHRL

Professor: Business - Human Resources

Meet Joanne, a Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) with over a decade of experience in leading Human Resources functions, including recruitment, training, performance management, health and safety, and employee relations in both unionized and non-unionized environments. Joanne has worked with top Canadian and American hotel chains, such as Marriott, Holiday Inn, and Renaissance, and holds a degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management from the Toronto Metropolitan University.

In 2010, she joined Fleming College as faculty in the School of Business, coordinating the Human Resources Program and spearheading major changes to the program, including a full-semester placement in the final semester of the HR Diploma Program. Joanne's unwavering commitment to students and her passion for HR also extends to her volunteer work with the Student Liaison Committee of the Human Resources Professional Association, Peterborough Chapter, and the Workforce Development Board serving Northumberland, Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, and Haliburton. Joanne's extensive knowledge and dedication make her an invaluable asset in ensuring student success.
