In The News: Practical Nursing HyFlex

The Power to Transform: Celebrating Nursing Week and Your Future in the Practical Nursing Program at Fleming College

National Nursing Week is a time to honour the dedication and resilience of the individuals who form the backbone of our healthcare system. It’s a reminder to recognize how a strong nursing career can change lives and communities. The National Nursing Week theme for 2026, "The Power of Nurses to Transform Health," reflects the evolving role of a nurse. Nurses are more than care providers; they are innovators, advocates, and leaders who bridge the gap between medical science and compassionate community care.

In Ontario, the call for nursing professionals has never been louder. With a growing and aging population in our province, there’s a critical, long-term demand for practical and registered nurses across hospitals, long-term care, and community health centres.

For anyone considering a career in nursing, this is a meaningful moment to step forward and become a nurse with the right education and nurse training.

Celebrating Our Future Professionals: Student Nurses Day

A highlight of this week is Student Nurses Day on Wednesday, May 13. It’s a moment during National Nursing Week to recognize the vital contributions our learners make long before they graduate with a Fleming College Practical Nursing diploma. Through immersive experiential learning and clinical placements, Fleming’s Practical Nursing students are already in the field, providing essential support to hospitals and healthcare teams. Our students show how nursing in Ontario thrives when education and practice align.

Simulation training and clinical placements are where theory meets practice. Our students in the Practical Nursing program gain invaluable real-world experience while helping to ease the pressure on our provincial health system. By the time they earn their nursing diploma, they’ve achieved rigorous learning outcomes, including the ability to:

  • Communicate effectively with clients and healthcare teams.
  • Practice in a self-regulated, professional, and ethical manner.
  • Contribute to the plan of care based on a holistic nursing assessment.
  • Integrate health promotion strategies into their daily practice.

Flexibility Designed for Your Life

To transform the system, we must first make education accessible. Webinar Wednesday Recap: Practical Nursing HyFlex

Last week we hosted a Webinar Wednesday session shining a spotlight on our new Practical Nursing HyFlex program. If you couldn’t join us virtually, don’t worry. Below are the highlights from the session, along with the full recording below to watch at your convenience.

During the session, prospective students connected with Shannon Bellamy from Student Recruitment and Jill Henderson, Program Coordinator, to learn more about how the HyFlex model works in practice. The webinar covered program structure, flexible learning options, hands-on components like labs and clinical placements, and future career opportunities in nursing.

WHY PRACTICAL NURSING HYFLEX AT FLEMING?

Fleming’s Practical Nursing HyFlex program is designed with flexibility in mind, making it an ideal option for students balancing work, family, or other commitments. The program blends self-paced theory learning with in-person and hands-on experiences, ensuring students still gain the practical skills required for real-world healthcare settings.

Students can expect a combination of asynchronous coursework, skills labs (either in weekly sessions or intensive “bootcamp” formats), and extensive clinical placements. With over 900 hours of clinical experience built into the program design, graduates will be prepared to enter the workforce with confidence and adaptability.

THREE KEY TAKEAWAYS

1. A Flexible, Student-Centred Learning Model

The HyFlex Practical Nursing program is structured across five consecutive semesters (approximately 18 months) with three intakes per year: January, May, and September. One of the most unique features is its asynchronous delivery for theory courses, allowing students to complete coursework on their own schedule rather than attending fixed weekly lectures.

For hands-on learning, students can choose between two lab formats each semester:

  • Weekend Lab Intensives on Campus: Lab skills are grouped and delivered through immersive, intensive weekend sessions on campus

  • Preceptored Lab Skills: Lab skills are completed on site through placement, providing a structured, supervised learning experience at a traditional pace.

This flexibility allows students to tailor their experience based on location, schedule, and personal learning preferences.

2. Hands-On Learning with Real-World Application

Even with a flexible format, experiential learning remains a core part of the program. Students will participate in:

  • Skills labs focused on foundational and advanced nursing techniques

  • Clinical placements beginning in Semester 1

  • A final 400-hour consolidation placement

Clinical placements follow a preceptor model, meaning students work one-on-one with a nurse in real healthcare settings. Placements progress in complexity, from long-term care in early semesters to more acute and specialized environments later on.

Simulation learning is also being integrated into the HyFlex model, providing safe, supportive environments for students to practice and build confidence before entering clinical settings.

3. Strong Career Pathways and Continued Education Opportunities

Practical Nursing opens the door to a wide range of career opportunities across healthcare settings, including hospitals, long-term care homes, community care, clinics, and more. The profession also offers flexibility to move between specialties and grow over time.

Graduates may also choose to continue their education through bridging pathways into Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) programs and beyond. The program is designed not only to prepare students for immediate employment but also to support long-term career development in healthcare.

Fleming College Introduces HyFlex Delivery Option for Practical Nursing Program

Peterborough, ON — January 22, 2026 — Fleming College is expanding access to its established Practical Nursing (PN) program with the launch of a new HyFlex delivery option, giving students greater learning flexibility while maintaining the high-quality clinical training the program is known for.

The HyFlex delivery model helps learners balance education, employment, and life commitments by allowing students to complete coursework online and choose where they gain practical experience. Students can choose to build their practical skills — a vital component of the Practical Nursing program — through intensive weekend labs at Fleming’s state-of-the-art facilities on campus or through immersive clinical placements close to home.

“Fleming College remains at the forefront of progressive nursing education and training,” says Nick Stone, Associate Vice President, Health. “Our HyFlex delivery option expands access to nursing education in Ontario by removing geographical barriers, while maintaining the necessary hands-on training that is essential to learning correct patient care practices.”

Fleming’s Practical Nursing program prepares graduates to work as essential members of healthcare teams in hospitals, long-term care homes, community health agencies, and other clinical settings. The program holds Category 1 approval from the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), meeting the academic requirements for graduates to be eligible to write the registration exam to become a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN).

The Practical Nursing program, offered in full-time, part-time, and HyFlex delivery formats, is currently accepting applications for its February 2026 intake.
