Global Impact: Dr. Michelle Acorn’s Visionary Leadership
Dr. Michelle Acorn, a proud Fleming College Nursing alumna, has forged an extraordinary path in healthcare leadership. As the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Nurse Practitioners’ Association of Ontario (NPAO), Dr. Acorn is a steadfast advocate for nurse practitioners, working to strengthen their role in Ontario’s healthcare system.
Before stepping into her current role, Dr. Acorn made history as the inaugural Chief Nurse of the International Council of Nurses (ICN). In this global leadership position, she supported 138 national nursing associations, representing nearly 28 million nurses worldwide. Her work at ICN focused on advancing global health policies, strengthening nursing leadership, and ensuring equitable, high-quality care.
Reflecting on her time at Fleming, nearly 35 years ago, Dr. Acorn shares:
"Fleming prepared me clinically to optimize my technical competence and confidence to deliver safe high-quality care. It also taught me that nursing’s impact is not confined by geography, sectors, or practice—it extends from local communities to the global stage."
Dr. Acorn’s distinguished career includes serving as Ontario’s Provincial Chief Nurse Officer and earning Fellow designations from the American Academy of Nursing, the Canadian Academy of Nursing, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and the Queen’s Nursing Institute in England. Dr. Acorn was recently named one of the top 20 visionary Canadian CEOs, a testament to her leadership and contributions to health policy, workforce development, and nursing education. Despite her many accolades, Dr. Acorn remains dedicated to clinical practice and teaching.
As CEO of NPAO, she represents more than 5,400 Nurse Practitioners (NPs) across Ontario—nearly half of all NPs in Canada—advocating for improved access to quality healthcare, greater integration of NPs across the system, and leveraging professional expertise to drive leadership solutions.
“The more I learn, the more opportunities I uncover to influence education, care, and leadership,” she says. “It’s less about me and more about the greater good—health for all.”
New Horizons in Cardiac Care: Fleming’s Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography Program
Fleming College is embarking on an exciting journey in health education with the upcoming launch of its Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography program. This program will address critical needs within the healthcare sector while further solidifying Fleming’s reputation as a leader in applied health education. The two-year, four-semester program will provide students with specialized training to become Cardiac Sonographers—highly skilled professionals who use ultrasound technology to aid physicians in diagnosing heart conditions.
Designed for working healthcare professionals who want to advance their skills, the program is intentionally structured to ensure students can continue working while gaining new credentials. Fleming’s delivery format offers theoretical lessons online—either asynchronously or in real-time—while practical, hands-on training will take place over weekends spread throughout each semester. This structure allows students to balance education with their careers, addressing the need for more highly trained healthcare professionals without exacerbating existing labour shortages.
Meeting Industry Demand
Cardiovascular disease remains one of the leading health challenges worldwide, creating an ever-increasing demand for diagnostic services that can help detect heart conditions early. Similar to most healthcare occupations, the demand for Cardiac Sonographers is projected to surge over the next decade, mostly due to the aging population in Canada. Job growth is expected to rise 20.7% nationally and 19.9% in Ontario.
With this program, Fleming is not only responding to that demand but also strengthening its role as an educational institution that contributes directly to community health and well-being.
Gaining Real-World Experience
A key differentiator of this program is its real-world, hands-on experience. While other Ontario-based Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography programs operate in on-campus labs, Fleming’s students will train in a fully operational cardiology clinic, gaining an authentic experience in a healthcare setting. This unique element supports students in developing the confidence and skills needed to excel in the workplace from day one.
Another standout feature is the integration of advanced simulation technology. In addition to scanning live subjects, students will train on high-fidelity simulation torsos (manikins) programmed to replicate various cardiac abnormalities. Unlike practicing on classmates—whose scans typically yield normal results—this allows students to gain more experience identifying cardiac abnormalities and presenting them to the cardiologist.
A Program Aligned with the Future
The Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography program is a natural extension of Fleming’s focus on applied, hands-on education. The curriculum incorporates geriatric patient care, Indigenous health, and simulation-based training, setting it apart from other offerings in the province. Additionally, Fleming’s commitment to Universal Design for Learning (UDL) ensures an inclusive, flexible curriculum that aligns with the College’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion priorities.
By blending cutting-edge technology, real-world training, and a student-centred approach, Fleming’s new Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography program is positioned to be a leader in applied health education—offering a forward-thinking solution to Canada’s growing healthcare needs.
A Milestone for Fleming College
This program is more than a new offering—it is a reflection of Fleming’s ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence in health education. It builds on the College’s history of developing programs that meet societal needs while opening doors for students to pursue fulfilling careers. Further, it is one step on the path to expanding health program offerings at Fleming in the next five years. Stay tuned for the 2026 issue of Fleming Ignites magazine where we’ll highlight our next big project in applied health: an applied degree in Paramedicine.
