Webinar Wednesday Recap: Practical Nursing HyFlex

Published

Last week we hosted a Webinar Wednesday session shining a spotlight on our new Practical Nursing HyFlex program. If you couldn’t join us virtually, don’t worry. Below are the highlights from the session, along with the full recording below to watch at your convenience.

During the session, prospective students connected with Shannon Bellamy from Student Recruitment and Jill Henderson, Program Coordinator, to learn more about how the HyFlex model works in practice. The webinar covered program structure, flexible learning options, hands-on components like labs and clinical placements, and future career opportunities in nursing.

WHY PRACTICAL NURSING HYFLEX AT FLEMING?

Fleming’s Practical Nursing HyFlex program is designed with flexibility in mind, making it an ideal option for students balancing work, family, or other commitments. The program blends self-paced theory learning with in-person and hands-on experiences, ensuring students still gain the practical skills required for real-world healthcare settings.

Students can expect a combination of asynchronous coursework, skills labs (either in weekly sessions or intensive “bootcamp” formats), and extensive clinical placements. With over 900 hours of clinical experience built into the program design, graduates will be prepared to enter the workforce with confidence and adaptability.

THREE KEY TAKEAWAYS

1. A Flexible, Student-Centred Learning Model

The HyFlex Practical Nursing program is structured across five consecutive semesters (approximately 18 months) with three intakes per year: January, May, and September. One of the most unique features is its asynchronous delivery for theory courses, allowing students to complete coursework on their own schedule rather than attending fixed weekly lectures.

For hands-on learning, students can choose between two lab formats each semester:

  • Weekend “bootcamp” labs that group skills into intensive sessions
  • Weekly on-campus labs for a more traditional learning pace

This flexibility allows students to tailor their experience based on location, schedule, and personal learning preferences.

2. Hands-On Learning with Real-World Application

Even with a flexible format, experiential learning remains a core part of the program. Students will participate in:

  • Skills labs focused on foundational and advanced nursing techniques
  • Clinical placements beginning in Semester 1
  • A final 400-hour consolidation placement

Clinical placements follow a preceptor model, meaning students work one-on-one with a nurse in real healthcare settings. Placements progress in complexity, from long-term care in early semesters to more acute and specialized environments later on.

Simulation learning is also being integrated into the HyFlex model, providing safe, supportive environments for students to practice and build confidence before entering clinical settings.

3. Strong Career Pathways and Continued Education Opportunities

Practical Nursing opens the door to a wide range of career opportunities across healthcare settings, including hospitals, long-term care homes, community care, clinics, and more. The profession also offers flexibility to move between specialties and grow over time.

Graduates may also choose to continue their education through bridging pathways into Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) programs and beyond. The program is designed not only to prepare students for immediate employment but also to support long-term career development in healthcare.
