Quilting Oodles of Doodles

There will be a $25 material fee payable to the instructor to cover the cost of fabric marking pens. Bring your own if you have them, but please ensure marks will disappear with heat.

OODLES OF DOODLES with Marg Notar

Please bring:

• Fabric: ** please pre-wash all fabric before cutting*
• Solid white quilting cotton, approximately 2/3 yard, cut into 5 ½" squares (you’ll need 24-27* squares)
• Solid black quilting cotton, approximately 2/3 yard, cut into 5 ½" squares (you’ll need 24-27* squares)
• Bring your extra fabric for binding (you'll need a final length, stitched together, of 1½" x about 160") and for a sleeve (9" x 32"- if you choose to hang your finished quilt on a wall).
• Accent fabric: you'll need three to five, 5 ½" squares of quilting cotton, your choice of colour as long as it is solid (no prints). Can all be the same or different colours.
• If you choose pastel colours for these accent squares, then you’ll need 24 white squares and 27 black squares. If you choose bold, vibrant colours for the accent squares, you'll need 27 white and 24 black squares.
• Backing fabric: approximately 1 1/3 yards of your choice of quilting cotton fabric, cut into 54 squares measuring 5 ½" x 5 ½".
• Note: If you’re not a fan of black and white, choose a solid colour(s) of your choice for the backing fabric since the finished quilt can be reversible and this colour can become the front of your finished product.

• Batting: enough cotton or wool batting to cover a finished quilt measuring approximately 30" wide by 45" tall. You will need to cut this into 54 squares measuring 4 ½" x 4 ½".
• Note: Cotton batting comes in white or natural colour (get white if you can) and tends to be slightly heavier than other options (e.g. Quilter’s Dream cotton batting.) Wool batting is lighter (and warmer) than cotton batting and shows off your stitching nicely due to its higher loft (or fluffiness) than cotton (e.g. Hobb’s Tuscany wool batting.) Bamboo batting is more environmentally friendly than cotton and looks similar but can be more expensive (e.g. Pellon’s bamboo batting.) Your choice!
• Thread: 
•  black thread
•  white thread
• Bobbins already wound with each of those colours
• Lighter and darker threads the same colour as your accent fabric(s)

Sewing machine equipment and accessories to bring:

• Sewing machine in good working order, extension cord, & manual if you are not totally familiar with your machine
• Please make sure you know how to lower your feed dogs.
• Table extension or spare arm for your machine (optional though this gives more surface on which to sew)
• Darning or free-motion foot (a must!)
• Extra sewing machine needles (size 80 and 90)
• Quilting ruler (4" x 12" or 4" x 24" – any that includes 4" as a minimum)
• Pins, scissors, hand sewing needle

Other:

• Pencil sharpener with wide (3/8") opening
• Notebook or sketchbook and pen/pencil

Mandatory Studio Safety Practices 

  

Your health and safety is our priority. Our studio environments can have a number of objects, tools and chemicals that require personal protective equipment (PPE) or other consideration for your well-being. All persons (including faculty, staff and students) are asked to observe the following while in the shops and studios: 
 

• Wear sturdy and appropriate shoes such as sneakers, closed leather shoes or work boots open-toed shoes, flip-flops or high heels are not allowed. 

• No long, dangling clothing or accessories (scarves, flowing sleeves, chains, long necklaces, etc.). 

• Long hair must be tied back. 

• No bare skin if exposure to chemicals or tools/machinery is likely. 

• Appropriate PPE is mandatory when operating tools and equipment within the studios. 

• Please consult with the faculty or studio technician to determine the appropriate PPE required for specific machines and studio processes. 
   

Fit tests are required for courses requiring a respirator as noted on your material list. Arrangements will be made on-site. As these are mandatory safety practices, we will follow up directly with students who may have oversighted the above. Individuals may be asked to address any concerns before continuing to work in the studio. Be sure to buy appropriate, good-quality safety articles and equipment, i.e. safety boots, protective eyewear, hearing protection, work gloves, x-acto knives, etc. - Ask your supplier for advice.
