Fibre Arts - Stitch the Earth

Course Code: ARTS2956

Explore the colours of the land through painting, printing and stitching with nature using minerals and clays to colour fibre. Discover how earth pigments have been used for centuries to colour textiles, ceramics, and artworks, from cave paintings to contemporary design. Learn the recipes to apply natural colour to fibres. Experiment with natural earth pigments on linen and cotton fabrics, including colour from locally sourced clay dyes. You will construct an art piece by painting, printing, and assemblage, learning how to embellish with basic and decorative stitches, raw-edge applique, and layering using a variety of threads you have nature dyed. You are encouraged to bring your own natural fabric and threads such as linen and cotton if you wish to incorporate personal textiles into the process. The use of up-cycled materials is encouraged.
