Millinery - The Art of Hat Making

• Straw and felt bodies, grosgrain ribbon, wire, clamps, spray sizing and use of hat blocks.

There will be a material fee of $95 - $160 per hat, payable to the instructor on the first day. (*see included materials)

*** DUE TO THE FLUCTUATING US DOLLAR EXCHANGE AND THE  ONGOING IMPOSED TARIFFS, THE RAW MATERIALS HAVE GONE UP IN PRICE. I ENCOURAGE YOU TO SOURCE YOUR OWN FELTS AND STRAW MATERIALS FOR BLOCKING AS I WILL BE BRINGING LIMITED COLOUR AND QUANTITIES.

Students please bring:

• Photos, books, magazines or any other ideas for hats that you may want to draw inspiration from
• Ribbon, fabric (lightweight and heavier weight for trimming and embellishment)
• Any items that you wish to use as trimming for straw and/or felt hats
• (i.e. feathers, beads, buttons, lace, silk, velvet, ribbons of any material)
• *Bring more items if you wish to make more hats.
• Scissors, measuring tape, dressmaker pins, and chalk
• A selection of thread colours
• Hand sewing needles
• Sewing machine, bobbins for machine, spare machine needles
• 1 box of 100 plastic or metal push pins (very important)  
• Instructor will have available for sale individual boxes of 100 metal push pins for blocking - $25.00/box payable in class.
• Iron (if you do not have one, see if you can borrow from a friend or you may be able to share with a classmate)
• Mirror
• Paper safety masks (used by painters & drywall installers)
• Plastic spray bottle
• Small hammer
• Blow dryer (if possible)
