OHS SPINNING CERTIFICATE PROGRAM – LEVEL V

• Please check the status of your course before purchasing materials.
• Be prepared to pay a $120 material fee to the class treasurer and a $50 marking fee to the course co-ordinator on the first day.

MATERIALS LIST

Please bring to each class (marked for identification) unless otherwise stated:

• Show-and-tell skeins
• Spinning wheel in good working order, with Lazy Kate (preferably tensioned), maintenance supplies, and lubricant
• Niddy noddy – small is best
• Hand carders (regular and fine, if you have them) and flick carder
• Aprons or lap cloths (dark for spinning light-coloured fibres; light for dark fibres)
• Ruler/ measuring tape, yarn gauge, twist angle gauge or protractor
• Twist angle gauge or protractor
• Small plastic baggies (lots), labels and/or masking tape, scissors
• Sample cards - approximately 2”x 3” for winding and recording yarn samples
• Three-ring binder, paper, and writing materials
• Cotton yarn for tying skeins

• SPECIAL for Cotton: Highest ratio flyer available for your wheel; cotton carders (if available); tahkli spindle or charka (if available)
• SPECIAL for Flax: Mask if you have breathing problems, since flax and hemp are dusty; a loose but strong leather belt; hand towels without fringes; distaff (any kind, if available); 3.5 m of ribbon (0.75-1.5 cm wide; grosgrain ribbon works well); small unbreakable container for water (e.g., cream cheese tub); shoes with covered toes (No bare feet or sandals when handling flax preparation equipment)
• SPECIAL for Fibre Identification (if available): Any hand-held magnifiers (e.g., magnifying glass, loupe, or phone magnifier); white cotton gloves

Optional:

• Drop spindle
• Ball winder or nostepinne
• Camera
• Books or articles on related topics to share with your fellow students

• Note that there is no Dyeing Unit in Level V.
• Reminder: please have your OHS membership paid for 2026.
• Note: Food service is unavailable on Saturdays

Mandatory Studio Safety Practices 

Your health and safety is our priority. Our studio environments can have a number of objects, tools and chemicals that require personal protective equipment (PPE) or other consideration for your well-being. All persons (including faculty, staff and students) are asked to observe the following while in the shops and studios: 
 

• Wear sturdy and appropriate shoes such as sneakers, closed leather shoes or work boots open-toed shoes, flip-flops or high heels are not allowed. 

• No long, dangling clothing or accessories (scarves, flowing sleeves, chains, long necklaces, etc.). 

• Long hair must be tied back. 

• No bare skin if exposure to chemicals or tools/machinery is likely. 

• Appropriate PPE is mandatory when operating tools and equipment within the studios. 

• Please consult with the faculty or studio technician to determine the appropriate PPE required for specific machines and studio processes. 
   

Fit tests are required for courses requiring a respirator as noted on your material list. Arrangements will be made on-site. As these are mandatory safety practices, we will follow up directly with students who may have oversighted the above. Individuals may be asked to address any concerns before continuing to work in the studio. Be sure to buy appropriate, good-quality safety articles and equipment, i.e. safety boots, protective eyewear, hearing protection, work gloves, x-acto knives, etc. - Ask your supplier for advice.
