Meet our Faculty

Nancy Newman
Nancy Newman
Nancy Newman is an artist, teacher and juror. She is a Director of the Toronto Watercolour Society. Nancy has exhibited her work in many solo and juried shows including TWS Aquavision, International Watercolour Society Canada (IWS), Art Aurora, Society of York Region Artists (SOYRA) and Blue Mountain Foundation of the Arts (BMFA). She has received several first place, award of merit, honourable mention and people's choice awards. A guest instructor for many art societies, she has taught at the Aurora Cultural Centre and the Blue Mountain School of Landscape Painting. Nancy is a long-time instructor at Haliburton School of Art and Design. Recently, she has been sharing her expertise and support via Zoom courses and workshops.
Brenna MacCrimmon
Brenna MacCrimmon
Brenna MacCrimmon took up the ukulele in 2009 and now rarely leaves home without it. Her musical adventures began over 30 years ago when she set out to study the music of Turkey and the Balkans. Since that time she has performed in Turkey and abroad with Selim Sesler (trad Turkish Gypsy), Muammer Ketencoglu (trad Balkan) and psychedelic Turkish rock group Baba Zula, as well as numerous ensembles in the US and Canada. She has also toured Europe with Balkan beat DJ Shantel and the Bucovina Club Orkestra. Brenna has recorded with the above musicians and has appeared as a guest on many albums and film soundtracks in Canada, the US, and Europe. In 2010, she found herself in Moscow as a member of the cast of Bobble with Bobby McFerrin. More recently in Toronto, she performs with Juno and CFMA nominated Turkwaz, sings with ragtime pianist Bill Westcott and runs regular ukulele sessions in her downtown studio. During the pandemic, she has been a frequent guest artist with Mabellearts, delivering community arts programs online for newcomers, and has been learning the practical aspects of Turkish shadow puppetry. www.greengoatmusic.ca
Michael Flaherty
Michael Flaherty

Instructor for:

Micheal Flaherty was born in St. John's and continues to call Newfoundland his home, while his work, research and studies in ceramics have taken him across Canada and beyond. He earned a diploma in Visual Arts from College of the North Atlantic, a Bachelor of Fine Arts from NSCAD University, and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Regina. Michael has previously taught sculpture and ceramics at NSCAD, University of Regina and Memorial University of Newfoundland, and worked as ceramics technician at Red Deer College. Spanning the past fifteen years, Michael's studio practice has explored diverse themes including politics in art, interdisciplinary craft, and human and natural geography. In 2011 Flaherty's work was recognized when he was a semi-finalist for the prestigious Sobey Art Award. Flaherty was a finalist for the RBC Peoples' Choice award and won the Large Year Award from Visual Artists Newfoundland and Labrador in 2013.
Lisa Barry
Lisa Barry

Instructor for:

Lisa Barry is a graduate of Sheridan College's Ceramics Program and has also achieved a BFA from the Alberta College of Art and Design. Lisa has a broad range of experience with various pottery techniques as well as kiln firing processes. An artist of note, she has exhibited nationally and continues to develop herself as an artist through workshops and learning opportunities. Lisa brings a passion and energy to her teaching that ensures a lively and creative atmosphere for her students.
Joanna Turlej
Joanna Turlej
Joanna Turlej graduated from OCAD University with an Honours degree and an Award of Excellence, followed by 25 years working as a fine artist and exploring various media. Since 2014 she has focused on paper collage, for which she has received numerous awards. Joanna has participated in Art Monaco, Human Rights, #H2O Exhibition, sponsored by UNESCO in Italy, and three times in The Artist Project, Toronto. She exhibits in juried exhibitions in Ontario and internationally and is an elected life member and President of CFS (Colour and Form Society). www.joannaturlej.com
Sheila Mahut
Sheila Mahut
Sheila Mahut has been a glass artist and educator for over 30 years. She has exhibited internationally and successfully developed many blown and sculptural glass series. Teaching in the full-time program at Sheridan College for 18 years and at the Corning Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass, she has a diverse repertoire of skills and techniques in both kiln-formed and blown glass. In 2019 Sheila completed an MFA at the Alberta University of the Arts. She is known as an enthusiastic instructor who encourages her students to explore the joy of creating with glass.
Jan Anderson
Jan Anderson

Instructor for:

Jan Anderson became a committed fabric artist-quilter after taking her first course at the Haliburton School of Art + Design. After experimenting and creating with glass, wood, stone, paper and wire, she is addicted to the texture, diversity and colour of textiles. Jan manipulates wax, wool rovings, rust, paint, dye, pigment, canvas, cotton, origami, embellishments, and more to produce unique wall hangings. She has over seventeen years of teaching experience at colleges and universities in Ontario and is recognized for her passion, creativity and innovation, touched by humour and motivation. www.bytheriverstudio.ca
Kim-Lee Kho
Kim-Lee Kho
Kim-Lee Kho is a multidisciplinary artist and former designer with a family of scientists and artists that have influenced her work. In 2016 and 2018 she was a featured artist in the In Situ arts festivals in Mississauga, with multimedia installations and live performances. Kim has participated nationally in exhibitions, residencies, and mentorships and had two major solo exhibitions in Toronto in 2019. A popular and knowledgeable arts instructor, she teaches at Neilson Park Creative Centre in Etobicoke, while also teaching, presenting, critiquing, demonstrating, and jurying exhibitions at the invitation of art groups in Ontario. www.kimleekho.ca
Shannon Kennedy
Shannon Kennedy

Shannon Kennedy has been exploring the cutting edge of design using digital manufacturing technologies like 3D printing for years, integrating the skills of the craft artist and the technologies of manufacturing. 3D modelling, rapid prototyping, and 3D printing advanced techniques have created a new way for her to realize her designs as a jeweller. She graduated in 1996 from the Ontario College of Art and Design and furthered her jewellery making skills by attending George Brown College's Jewellery Art Program. She is an award-winning designer, a Saul Bell finalist, and published PMC artist. In recognition of her PMC work, she was invited to give a PMC demonstration at the SNAG Conference in Toronto, 2013. Shannon is a passionate instructor at several colleges and galleries, as well as at her studio. Tanya Lyons
Tanya Lyons

Instructor for:

Tanya Lyons graduated with honours from the Sheridan College glass program. She also studied at the University of Art and Design Helsinki, Finland, The Atlin Art Centre in BC, and the Toyama Institute of Glass Art in Japan. She taught glass at Sheridan College for four years, was a resident at the Harbourfront Centre as well as volunteering on the Board of Directors for the Glass Art Association of Canada. After 14 years in Quebec, Tanya has moved back to her hometown community to raise her daughter and continue her sculptural work with glass. Reflecting her passion for helping people find their way, she continues to teach in the glass program at the Haliburton School of Art + Design. She is the Co-Coordinator of the Madawaska Valley Studio Tour and a collaborating artist with the Ottawa Valley Community Arts organization. Tanya has always been a gatherer, collecting and taking in, objects, moments and memories. She uses glass in combination with natural and found objects to express and reflect her experiences, thoughts and questions about the world we live in and who we are. Her work has been exhibited throughout North America, Europe and Japan and is in many private and public collections including the Musee National des Beau-arts du Quebec. www.tanyalyons.ca
Putzy Madronich
Putzy Madronich
Putzy Madronich is an award-winning professional visual artist and educator. She studied at McMaster University, Fleming College, and Ecole France Langue Paris and has participated in international exhibitions. Working with outreach organizations (drug and alcohol addiction, survivors of cancer, sexual assault, brain injury, mental health, teens at risk, and the homeless) she delivers arts programming to promote healing and wellness. She has also been a consultant and artist educator for the Royal Conservatory. She works primarily in watercolour, mixed media, acrylic, collage and alcohol inks, but she also enjoys printmaking, painting floor cloths, encaustics, and jewellery making. Her work explodes with intense colour and is generously textured. Putzy's work is largely inspired by her travels in Europe, North Africa and South-East Asia.
