Webinar Wednesday Recap: Future Students
Last week, we hosted a Webinar Wednesday session focused on future students exploring their next steps in education. Led by Fleming’s Recruitment team, the webinar introduced prospective students to Fleming’s hands-on learning environment, highlighted key programs and campus facilities, and walked through the college application process. The session also covered the many supports available to help students succeed, from financial aid and housing resources to career services and academic supports.
Participants learned how Fleming prepares students for careers through practical learning opportunities, industry partnerships, and programs designed to meet current labour market needs. The webinar also included a step-by-step overview of how to apply through OntarioColleges.ca and what students can expect after receiving an offer.
Three Key Takeaways
1. Hands-on learning designed for career success
A major focus at Fleming is practical learning. Students gain experience through labs, applied research, and real-world learning environments such as simulation labs, industry placements, and community-based projects. For example, students in the Veterinary Technician program will train in partnership with the Peterborough Humane Society, while Pre-service Firefighter students train at a real fire hall at the Eastern Ontario Emergency Training Academy in Norwood.
This applied learning approach helps students graduate with the confidence and technical skills employers are looking for.
2. Diverse programs and unique campus experiences
Fleming offers a wide range of programs across seven schools of study, including health sciences, community services, business and information technology, trades and technology, environmental and natural resource sciences, general arts and sciences, and the Haliburton School of Art + Design.
Programs range from healthcare fields such as Practical Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, and Paramedic to environmental programs like Conservation Biology, Fish and Wildlife Technician, and Ecosystem Management Technician. Frost Campus also offers unique programs such as Blasting Techniques and Resources Drilling Technician, which are among the only programs of their kind in Canada.
Students can also pursue pathway opportunities that allow them to begin with a diploma at Fleming and continue to a university degree through articulation agreements with institutions such as Trent University and Ontario Tech.
3. Strong student support from application to career
Fleming offers extensive services to support students throughout their educational journey. These include peer tutoring, health services, career services, counselling, and accessible education services for students who require academic accommodations.
Students also have access to Indigenous Student Services, which provides cultural programming, academic support, and community connection for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis learners.
Housing supports are available for students living in residence or searching for off-campus housing, and financial support is also a key focus. Fleming distributes approximately $2 million annually in bursaries and provides support for students applying for OSAP and other funding opportunities.
Together, these supports help ensure students can focus on their studies and transition successfully into their careers.
