Pastel Painting - Intro

This is a SOFT pastel workshop. Please do not bring oil pastels. Please contact me before substituting brands.

 

**Purchasing the right type of pastels is a crucial part of the technique you will learn in this workshop.

 

Papers:

• A selection of Canson Mi-Tientes pastel paper. Please choose some light, medium and dark papers. Most people tend to stay with greys and beiges, I encourage you to bring any colour, pure, bright, crazy, whatever turns you on!
• 1 sheet of printmaking paper: BFK rives, Stonehenge or similar weight.
  

Pastels:

• 1. A minimum set of 12 NU Pastels (if you want to go bigger, by all means!)
• 2. Rembrandt pastels: You have a choice of purchasing their smallest set (15 half sticks) or purchasing individual sticks. I am giving you that option, as I think you will have a better selection of colours for mixing, but they are whole sticks, as follows:

Another suitable brand is Holbein. Please contact me before substituting for other brands.

 

Other items:

• kneaded eraser
• vine charcoal
• masking tape
• tin foil (small amount, 24" long)
• tracing paper (dollar store pad, 9 X 12)
• one piece of sandpaper

Optional items:

• an old bristle brush, baby wipes, bulldog or other clips, paper towel, and sketch pad to draw in or make notes
• 1 piece of foam core board (dollar store)
• 12 X 18 or similar size pad of newsprint

Mandatory Studio Safety Practices

 

Your health and safety is our priority. Our studio environments can have a number of objects, tools and chemicals that require personal protective equipment (PPE) or other consideration for your well-being. All persons (including faculty, staff and students) are asked to observe the following while in the shops and studios:

• Wear sturdy and appropriate shoes such as sneakers, closed leather shoes or work boots open-toed shoes, flip-flops or high heels are not allowed
• No long, dangling clothing or accessories (scarves, flowing sleeves, chains, long necklaces, etc.)
• Long hair must be tied back
• No bare skin if exposure to chemicals or tools/machinery is likely
• Appropriate PPE is mandatory when operating tools and equipment within the studios.
• Please consult with the faculty or studio technician to determine the appropriate PPE required for specific machines and studio processes.
  

Fit tests are required for courses requiring a respirator as noted on your material list. Arrangements will be made on-site. As these are mandatory safety practices, we will follow up directly with students who may have oversighted the above. Individuals may be asked to address any concerns before continuing to work in the studio. Be sure to buy appropriate, good-quality safety articles and equipment, i.e. safety boots, protective eyewear, hearing protection, work gloves, x-acto knives, etc. - ask your supplier for advice.
