Acrylics - Paint a Luminous Seascape

• 1 large gallery depth canvas 
• Canvas boards/canvas paper for colour theory exploration and small studies 
• Disposable palettes 
• Use of a selection of acrylic paint in a more sophisticated colour palette 
• Use of paint mediums such as glazing liquid 
• Selection of reference photos 

• Acrylic paint:  

1. Titanium White - because this is used often purchase a large tube 
2. Ultramarine Blue 
3. Prussian Blue 
4. Phthalo Turqoise 
5. Cadmium Yellow Medium (Liquitex makes a good Cadmium-free version in their professional heavy body line) 
6. Pyrrole Orange (a synthetic, non-toxic alternative to Cadmium Orange) 
7. Burnt Sienna 
8. Raw Sienna 

*Tri-Art (Canadian, and can be purchased online for reasonable prices) and Golden (American, more expensive) are good artist quality brands. I use mostly Tri-Art, and some Golden. 

*Liquitex is also a good choice, and Liquitex Basics is a good student brand in 118 ml tubes. 

• Paint brushes: Some brushes to include in your art kit are: 

• Flat brushes: 

• Small synthetic #4, 6 
• Medium #10, 12, 16 
• Large synthetic 1” width 

• Round brushes: 
• Medium synthetic #4-6 
• Fine synthetic #0-2 
• Very fine synthetic 3XO (003) 
• Filbert brush: synthetic 3/4" 

*I like the Zen series by Royal and Langnickel (short handle). They are synthetic, soft and great for fluid strokes. Sizes vary by manufacturer but can be similar. Avoid inexpensive hobby brushes or hog hair bristle brushes.

• Other items: 
• At least 1 palette knife, diamond shape with a bent neck 
• Water bucket (empty yogurt tubs work well) 
• Blue shop towels / rags / paper towel to dab brushes on 
• A roll of painter’s tape 
• Drawing pencils (3H or 4H) or watercolour pencils to lightly sketch composition on canvas 
• Apron or smock to protect clothing 

Optional Materials:

• Additional paint colours for a more sophisticated palette you may want to eventually add: 

1. Sap Green 
2. Quinacridone Gold (Holbein) or Azo Gold (Golden) 
3. Cerulean Blue Deep 

• Palette Paper Pad (9x12” or 12x16”) 
• Large makeup powder/blending brush 
• Your own reference photos 

Mandatory Studio Safety Practices 

Your health and safety is our priority. Our studio environments can have a number of objects, tools and chemicals that require personal protective equipment (PPE) or other consideration for your well-being. All persons (including faculty, staff and students) are asked to observe the following while in the shops and studios: 
 

• Wear sturdy and appropriate shoes such as sneakers, closed leather shoes or work boots open-toed shoes, flip-flops or high heels are not allowed. 

• No long, dangling clothing or accessories (scarves, flowing sleeves, chains, long necklaces, etc.). 

• Long hair must be tied back. 

• No bare skin if exposure to chemicals or tools/machinery is likely. 

• Appropriate PPE is mandatory when operating tools and equipment within the studios. 

• Please consult with the faculty or studio technician to determine the appropriate PPE required for specific machines and studio processes. 
   

Fit tests are required for courses requiring a respirator as noted on your material list. Arrangements will be made on-site. As these are mandatory safety practices, we will follow up directly with students who may have oversighted the above. Individuals may be asked to address any concerns before continuing to work in the studio. Be sure to buy appropriate, good-quality safety articles and equipment, i.e. safety boots, protective eyewear, hearing protection, work gloves, x-acto knives, etc. - Ask your supplier for advice.
