These courses are offered in partnership with the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (HKPR) District Health Unit.
All food premises, including restaurants, day cares, camps, special events vendors, long term care homes, etc., are required to have at least one certified food handler on site during hours of operations. Certificates are valid for five (5) years and are recommended for anyone working in the food industry.

In-person training
Review the Ministry of Health's Provincial Food Handler Training Manual at your own pace and write the exam in person at an official examination location. You can request a printed copy of the manual upon registration.
Write the exam in person at an official examination location, if you have been previously certified, received training elsewhere or have at least two (2) years of experience in the food industry. A free copy of the study material is available online in English and French to if you wish to review the materials beforehand. Register to complete the certification exam at one of our official examination locations.

Obtain your Food Handler Certification by learning how to handle and prepare food safely according to the Food Premises Regulation. All food premises, including special event vendors, are required to have at least one certified food handler on site during hours of operation. This Food Handler Certificate, which is valid for five years, is recommended for anyone working in the food industry. During the Food Handler Certification course, students will learn about the role of the Public Health Inspector and Public Health legislation, about bacteria that can cause illness, how to prevent foodborne illness, personal hygiene, premises sanitation, and pest control practices within food premises, as well as food allergens and food recalls, and will write the certification exam.

Review the Ministry of Health's Provincial Food Handler Training Manual at your own pace and complete the certification exam on the scheduled date and at the official exam location noted for your specific session. An electronic and/or printed version of the study material is included in the registration fee. Please note that printed materials will be sent by regular mail to registrants only upon request.

If you have been previously certified, received training from a third party or have at least two (2) years' experience in the food industry, you are eligible to complete the Food Handler Certification exam without a designated study period. A free copy of the study material is available online in English and French if you wish to review the materials beforehand. Register to complete the certification exam at one of our official exam locations.
