Acknowledging the Territory

We acknowledge that the land that Fleming College is on, is the traditional territory of the Michi Saagig Anishnaabe, people of the North shore of Lake Ontario and its tributaries. Fleming College Campus locations are covered by eighteen treaties and agreements that the Michi Saagig Anishnaabe participated in from 1781 to 1923.

Fleming College has settled on this land and recognizes that the region is now home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and the importance of respecting the voices and history of Indigenous communities. We are grateful to work on this land and will continue to build authentic and reciprocal relationships.

Fleming College Announces Renewal of CAWT as NSERC Technology Access Centre with Five Years of Additional Funding

(Lindsay, Ontario) – Fleming College is proud to announce that its Centre for Advancement of Water and Wastewater Technologies (CAWT) has been renewed as a Technology Access Centre (TAC) by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) for an additional five years.

This renewal was part of an announcement made today by Yasir Naqvi, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health and Ryan Turnbull, Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry on behalf of the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry. The TAC designation comes with $1.75M in continued funding, further supporting CAWT’s mission to advance research and innovation in water and wastewater technologies.

“We are incredibly proud of the work being done at the CAWT,” remarked Maureen Adamson, President of Fleming College. “The renewal of its status as an NSERC Technology Access Centre is a testament to the CAWT's excellence and its vital role in fostering innovation. This sustained support from NSERC will enable us to continue our collaborative research projects, support innovation, and provide invaluable training experiences for our students.”

Located in Lindsay, Ontario, the CAWT is Fleming College’s longest-running applied research centre and the only Canadian college water research facility with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation. With an impressive suite of analytical instruments, customized facilities, and talented experts in water and wastewater, the CAWT is sought after by industry, government, academia, and non-profit organizations.

“Being proactive in adapting to meet the changing needs of the water and wastewater industries has been a consistent mandate at the CAWT and remains one of the reasons why it has successfully operated for twenty years,” continued President Adamson.  “Over the next five years, through new strategic collaborations, the CAWT will have a significant effect on many of Canada's other innovative sectors.”

While primarily focused on supporting the water and wastewater industries with valuable research and development services, the CAWT has expanded its work to include wastewater research relevant to other industries, including mining, breweries, aquaculture, and advanced manufacturing. The CAWT has also created a unique full-scale wastewater treatment testing and research site, directly filling a need in the provincial marketplace.

NSERC TACs are recognized as specialized centres of expertise, equipment, and technology. They play a crucial role in fostering innovation, leading to beneficial business, social and/or health outcomes for Canada. With this renewal, the CAWT will continue to address critical water and wastewater challenges, providing sustainable solutions that benefit communities, industries, and ecosystems.

Fleming's Skilled Trades Students Take Centre Stage at Provincial Competition

Peterborough, ON (May 28, 2024) - Fleming College’s Skilled Trades students took home some serious hardware during the annual Skills Ontario competition May 6 to May 8 in Toronto.

Skills Ontario pits some of the province’s best and brightest trades and technology students against each other over two days of competition. This event is also a chance for students to challenge themselves and put their skills to the test in a high-pressure environment as their classmates, families and future employers cheer them on.

Seventeen Fleming students made the trip to the Toronto Convention Centre, competing in multiple skilled trades categories encompassing everything from Aesthetics to Plumbing.

Fleming students made it to the podium in three categories:

• Carpentry student Dylan Waddle brought home the gold medal in the Individual Carpentry competition.
• Liam Sands captured a gold medal in the Arborist category.
• Welding student Joseph Brownson nabbed a bronze medal in the Welding category.

Fleming’s students weren’t the only ones to receive recognition for their hard work and creativity at Skills Ontario. Fleming’s high traffic booth received a third-place nod for its creativity, interactive displays, its focus on trades and technology and the educational value it provided to the many prospective students who stopped by to see what Fleming College has to offer.

Fleming College is proud of all that its students, faculty and staff accomplished at Skills Ontario and extends its congratulations to the entire team.

Fleming College currently offers up to 100 full-time programs. Learn more here.

Ignite the Electric City Summit Returns to Fleming College

Peterborough, ON (May 22, 2024) - The second annual Ignite Summit took place at Fleming’s Sutherland Campus on May 9. More than 100 guests attended the day-long event.

Fleming College’s Ignite the Electric City: Healthy City, Healthy People brought together experts, policymakers, and community leaders to examine some of the critical health care issues facing our community.

“This was Ignite 2.0, now more than ever it is so important for Fleming to bring together experts, influencers, opinion leaders, and thought leaders to have disruptive conversation about the challenges we face, and we face profound challenges,” said Fleming College President Maureen Adamson. “I have deep belief in the collective in the room, that we can solve the problems that we are facing.”

Keynote speakers included Dr. Danielle Martin, Chair, Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto and Dr. Lynn Mikula, President & CEO, Peterborough Regional Health Centre. Both encouraged Peterborough to embrace out-of-the-box solutions to these vital challenges.

Speakers Paul Bennett from Ashburnham Realty, Dr. Lynn Mikula, President and CEO of the Peterborough Regional Health Centre, Fleming College President Maureen Adamson and Peterborough Police Chief Stu Betts at Ignite the Electric City: Healthy City, Health People Summit.

“Let’s look at the intersection between health care, education, and innovation, because this is where we need to find our solutions,” said Dr. Mikula. “There is not enough money to solve this problem. We must get creative.”

Ideas came from all sectors of the region.

A range of discussions focused on the overlap between social services and policing, calls for a new way to support local media outlets and community leaders spoke of the growing need for greater civic engagement.

Peterborough Mayor Jeff Leal (centre), chats with guests as the Ignite the Electric City Summit gets underway.

There were calls to re-humanize public health care, and to take a proactive, preventative, and predictive approach to medicine. Some big-picture thinkers suggested breaking the mould entirely by dismantling our current health care system and replacing it with a collaborative, community-based approach to better care for everyone.

“There are tons of great ideas out there that are implementable here, and you have all of the assets you need in this community to implement them,” said Dr. Danielle Martin. “You have the institutions, you have the backbone, and you have a committed group of leaders to make them happen.”

Fleming College is already taking steps to ensure the ideas and visions shared during Ignite the Electric City: Healthy City, Healthy People, become a reality for the Peterborough and the Kawarthas region. With the goal of becoming a hub of top-tier health care education, Fleming is preparing to offer multiple new programs in the health sector. This will help meet the growing demand for qualified, skilled workers while bolstering health care in our region.
The first of these programs, Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography, has recently been approved by Fleming’s Board of Governors.

Fleming's School of Health and Community Services has been actively researching innovative programming that meet current labour market demands. Some examples include Medical Laboratory Technologist, Ultrasound Technician, Diagnostic Imaging Technician (X-ray, MRI, etc.), Anesthetist Assistant, Physician Assistant, Perfusionist and Veterinary Technician.

Fleming expects to make more announcements about these potential new programs in the coming year.

During Ignite the Electric City: Healthy City, Healthy People, illustrator Shannon Loomer captured the ideas of the day and turned those thoughts into a visual representation of this year’s summit.

Last year’s conference, Ignite: The Electric City Summit, reimagined the future of Peterborough. Details from that conference can be found here.
