Checklist for New Fall 2025 International Students: Getting Ready for Fleming
Starting a new chapter in another country comes with both excitement and uncertainty, and we understand how much preparation it takes. At Fleming College, we want you to feel supported every step of the way. This guide will help you get ready, including what to do before you leave home, what to expect when you arrive in Canada, and how to make the most of your experience on campus.
Before You Leave Your Home Country
Planning ahead is key to settling in with confidence. Here’s what you should do before you board your flight:
- Create an iCent account and update your visa status regularly.
- Register and attend virtual orientation to meet staff and students and start building your sense of community at Fleming.
- Book your travel once you have your entry visa (ETA/TRV), and be sure to arrange arrival services.
- Begin your housing search. Start by reviewing the Fleming College Residence and Off-Campus Housing websites.
- Pack important documents. Remember to pack any documents you may need while you’re in Canada, including:
- Immunization and medical records
- Educational transcripts and certificates
- CV and professional employment portfolio
- Canadian currency or international travel cards
- Review your health insurance coverage and bring any needed prescriptions and/or medical supplies.
- Log into MyCampus and check your Fleming email regularly for updates.
- Check if your program has any Non-Academic Requirements (NARs) that you will need to complete before or upon arrival.
- Follow us on Instagram and Facebook to stay connected and informed.
When You Arrive in Canada
Welcome to your new home! These steps will help you navigate your arrival and settle in smoothly:
- Ensure your phone updates to the correct local time zone.
- Bring hard copies of your Letter of Admission and Port of Entry Letter of Introduction—you’ll need to show these to the CBSA officer.
- Collect your Study Permit and Co-Op Work Permit (if applicable). Before you leave the immigration area:
- Check all information is correct
- Take photos of your documents
- Store them safely with your passport
- Visit the iCent Airport Welcome Desk if you need support or guidance.
- Upload your Study Permit to iCent to receive your class timetable.
- Get a SIM card and compare mobile plans to find one that suits your needs.
- Apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN)—you’ll need this to work in Canada.
- Open a Canadian bank account.
- Explore your new city! Whether you’re living in Peterborough, Lindsay, or Haliburton, there’s lots to discover and enjoy.
When You’re On Campus
Now that you’ve arrived, it’s time to get involved and feel at home on campus:
- Attend in-person International Orientation and campus-specific Orientation to meet your classmates, instructors, and support teams.
- Join Student Life activities to make new friends and build community.
- Get to know your Student Association:
- Sutherland Campus: Student Administrative Council (SAC)
- Frost and Haliburton Campuses: Frost Student Association (FSA)
- Visit International Student Services for help with everything from academics to adjusting to life in Canada.
