Webinar Wednesday Rewind: Which Healthcare Program Is Right for You? 

If you know you want a career in healthcare but aren’t sure which program is the right fit, you’re not alone. Healthcare is a broad field, with opportunities ranging from direct patient care and nursing to pharmacy, laboratory science and community-based support. 

In this edition of Webinar Wednesday Rewind, we’re bringing together several of our healthcare-focused sessions to help you compare your options and explore where your interests could take you. 

Whether you picture yourself working directly with patients, supporting people in their homes and communities, preparing medications, or working behind the scenes in a laboratory, there are different ways to build a career in healthcare at Fleming College. 

If You Want to Provide Direct Patient Care 

If working closely with patients and being directly involved in their care appeals to you, Practical Nursing may be a path to explore. 

Fleming’s Practical Nursing program combines theory with nursing skills labs, high-fidelity simulation and more than 900 hours of clinical experience. Students gain experience in settings including hospitals, long-term care and community agencies, building toward a final 400-hour consolidation placement.  

Graduates can pursue Registered Practical Nurse opportunities in hospitals, long-term care homes, rehabilitation centres, clinics, community health settings, private homes and other areas of healthcare.  

This path may interest you if: you enjoy working directly with people, want significant hands-on clinical experience and are interested in developing nursing and patient-care skills.

If You’re Already a PSW and Want to Become a Practical Nurse 

Already working toward or holding a Personal Support Worker credential? Fleming also offers a PSW to Practical Nursing Bridge. 

Eligible PSWs can enter the Practical Nursing program in Semester 2 and complete the program over four consecutive semesters.  

It provides an opportunity to build on previous education and experience while progressing toward a Practical Nursing credential. 

This path may interest you if: you already have a PSW background and want to expand your scope of practice and continue your education in nursing. 

If You Need More Flexibility While Studying Nursing 

For students interested in becoming a Practical Nurse while balancing work, family or other commitments, Fleming’s Practical Nursing HyFlex program offers another option. 

The program combines asynchronous theory courses with hands-on learning. Students can choose between weekly on-campus skills labs or intensive weekend “bootcamp” labs each semester. The program runs across five consecutive semesters, or approximately 18 months, with January, May and September intakes.  

Students still complete extensive experiential learning, including clinical placements beginning in Semester 1 and a final 400-hour consolidation placement.  

This path may interest you if: you want to pursue Practical Nursing but need greater flexibility for when you complete the theory portion of your studies.

If You Want to Make a Difference Through Personal Care and Support 

If you’re drawn to helping people with their everyday care, independence and quality of life, consider the Personal Support Worker (PSW) program. 

Students combine foundational theory with skills labs, simulation and approximately 300 hours of clinical placement. Placements progress from supported experiences in long-term care or retirement settings to more independent experiences in the community.  

Fleming also offers different ways to complete the program, including options at the Sutherland and Frost campuses and a living classroom model where learning takes place directly inside a long-term care home.  

Graduates can pursue opportunities in long-term care, retirement homes, hospitals and community care, with the option to continue their education through Fleming’s PSW to Practical Nursing bridge.  

This path may interest you if: you want a highly people-focused career, enjoy supporting others with daily care and want to enter healthcare through a hands-on program.

If You’re Interested in Medications and the Technical Side of Healthcare 

Healthcare careers aren’t limited to bedside care. If you’re detail-oriented and interested in medications, calculations and technical processes, Pharmacy Technician offers a different way to contribute to patient care. 

Students begin with foundational courses including anatomy and physiology, pharmacy practice, professionalism, pharmacy software, medication safety, pharmacy math and pharmacy products before progressing into areas such as pharmacology, clinical pathology and drug distribution.  

Hands-on training takes place in realistic retail and hospital-style pharmacy labs. Students learn community pharmacy processes as well as sterile preparation techniques, unit dose packaging and hospital dispensing workflows.  

The program also includes a 200-hour community pharmacy placement and a 160-hour institutional placement, giving students experience in both retail and hospital environments.  

This path may interest you if: you’re precise, organized and interested in medications, pharmacy technology and a healthcare role that combines technical knowledge with patient and healthcare-team interaction.

If You Prefer Science and the Laboratory 

If the science behind healthcare and research interests you more than direct patient care, Biotechnology offers a laboratory-focused path. 

The program combines foundational science with extensive hands-on lab training and a dedicated field placement semester. Students develop skills that can lead to opportunities in biotechnology, research, quality control, analytical testing and other science sectors.

Across the first four semesters, students complete close to 500 hours of lab experience, progressing from foundational techniques such as pipetting and safe lab practices to DNA extraction, microbiological analysis, instrumentation and quality control procedures.  

Semester 5 is dedicated to a field placement of up to 600 hours, with potential settings including industry, research, healthcare, environmental and quality control environments.  

This path may interest you if: you enjoy biology and chemistry, prefer laboratory-based work and want to explore the scientific, research or diagnostic side of healthcare and related industries.

Patient Care or Technical Work: What Fits You? 

One of the biggest differences between these programs is how you want to contribute to healthcare. 

If you want frequent, direct interaction with patients or clients, Practical Nursing and Personal Support Worker offer extensive experience in care environments. If medications and pharmacy systems capture your interest, Pharmacy Technician combines healthcare with detailed technical work. If you’re more interested in science, testing and research, Biotechnology focuses heavily on laboratory skills and applications. 

Even within nursing, there are different pathways. Fleming’s Practical Nursing options include accelerated full-time, part-time, PSW to PN Bridge and HyFlex delivery, giving students different ways to work toward the same career field depending on their previous education, schedule and learning needs.  

Where Could Your Healthcare Career Take You? 

Healthcare happens in many different environments. Depending on the program you choose, your future workplace could include a hospital, long-term care home, community agency, private home, clinic, community or hospital pharmacy, research institute, diagnostic laboratory or other science-based setting.  

The right starting point depends on what interests you most: providing care, supporting independence, working with medications, or exploring science in the lab.

You don’t have to have your entire career figured out before choosing a program. Start by thinking about the kind of work you can see yourself enjoying, how much direct interaction you want with patients or clients, and whether you’re most interested in care, medications or science.
