Webinar Wednesday Recap: Hairstyling
Last week, we hosted a Webinar Wednesday session shining a spotlight on our Hairstyling program. If you couldn’t join us virtually, don’t worry. Below are the highlights from the session, along with the full recording below to watch at your convenience.
Fleming College’s Hairstyling program, offered within the School of Health and Community Services, is known for its hands on learning, real salon experience, and strong industry connections. During the webinar, prospective students connected with Romina Amou Zadeh from Student Recruitment and Chris Asta, Hairstyling Program Coordinator, to explore what the program looks like in action. Topics included the hybrid delivery model, hands-on lab learning, Academy Salon experience, apprenticeship hours, and career pathways within the trade.
Why Hairstyling at Fleming?
Fleming’s Hairstyling program is designed to prepare students for the realities of the salon industry from their very first semester. Students begin building foundational skills right away in cutting, colouring, and session styling, while also developing consultation, communication, and professional skills that are essential in this personal and creative field.
The program blends theory with extensive practical training in a professional lab environment. Students start working with friends and family in Semester 1 and progress to Academy Salon in Semester 2 and 3, where they provide services to real guests under the guidance of experienced faculty. Graduates complete 1,500 in-school hours toward their 3,500 required trade hours and leave the program confident, skilled, and ready to move into apprenticeship and employment opportunities.
Three Key Takeaways
1. Hands-on Learning from Day One
Students gain hands-on hair experience early in the program. Semester 1 focuses on foundational techniques in shape, colour, and session styling, along with business courses tailored specifically to the hair industry. In the second half of the first semester, students begin working with friends and family to build comfort and confidence.
In Semester 2 and 3, students transition into Academy Salon, working with real clients in a supportive environment. Each service is guided by faculty mentorship, creating a strong bridge between classroom learning and real-world salon practice.
2. A Hybrid Model That Prioritizes Practical Experience
The Hairstyling program follows a hybrid delivery model, but it is primarily hands-on. While some theory components are delivered virtually, most of the learning takes place on campus in professional lab spaces.
Students learn in a fully equipped salon environment and gain experience with booking systems, consultations, guest services, and day-to-day salon operations. The program also includes specialized learning such as multicultural hair techniques and makeup artistry, giving students a broader and more inclusive skill set.
3. A Clear Pathway into the Trade
Hairstyling is a compulsory trade in Ontario. Fleming provides 1,500 hours toward the 3,500 total hours required for licensing. Students can complete the remaining 2,000 apprenticeship hours either while in school or after graduation, depending on their situation.
The program prepares students for the current government written exam and is designed with future red seal practical requirements in mind. Graduates are equipped to pursue careers in salons, become independent stylists, specialize in areas like weddings or colour, and continue building their professional portfolios.
