Building Career Ready Welders Through Industry Partnership

Published

Fleming College recently welcomed BWXT Canada Ltd. to campus for a two-day workshop that brought real world employment opportunities directly to our Welding and Fabrication Technician students. Over two days, BWXT representatives conducted on site interviews, ran hands-on welding tests, and spent time talking with students about what life and career growth at BWXT can look like. For many students, it was a chance to see a clear path forward from the welding lab to a full-time job before they graduate.

With positions available at BWXT’s Cambridge location, our students face travel barriers when completing required interview testing, including limited finances and a lack of transportation. Instead of students attending interviews individually, we arranged for BWXT to come to us. This not only creates a more accessible pathway for students to secure employment but also supports employers in addressing the skills shortage by removing unnecessary barriers that stand in the way of qualified talent.

Experiences like this are a big part of why Fleming’s Welding programs have built such a strong reputation not just in Peterborough, but across Ontario. Employers know our graduates are skilled, safety focused, and ready to step into the workforce. The program continues to evolve alongside industry needs, making sure students  learn techniques and standards that reflect what is happening on job sites right now.

Strong partnerships between Fleming and employers like BWXT help create a steady connection between education and industry in our province. By giving students opportunities to engage directly with employers before graduation, the College continues to support workforce development while helping students explore meaningful career options.
