Webinar Wednesday Recap: Dual Credit

We recently hosted a Webinar Wednesday session all about Fleming College’s Dual Credit program. If you couldn’t join us live, don’t worry. Below are some of the key highlights from the session, along with the full recording to watch whenever it’s convenient for you. 

During the webinar, prospective students, parents, and educators connected with Romina Amou Zadeh from Student Recruitment and Jon Taylor, Fleming College’s Dual Credit Operations Coordinator, to learn how high school students can earn both a high school credit and a college credit at the same time. The session explored who is eligible, what students can expect in a dual credit course, the benefits of participating, and how to get started. 

WHY TAKE A DUAL CREDIT COURSE

Dual Credit gives senior high school students the opportunity to experience college while they’re still completing high school. 

Students earn both a secondary school credit and a college credit through a single course, allowing them to get ahead academically while exploring potential career pathways. Beyond earning credits, Dual Credit helps students build confidence, experience college-level learning, and become familiar with campus life before beginning full-time post-secondary studies. 

Whether students discover a career they’re passionate about or realize they’d like to explore another path, Dual Credit provides valuable experience that helps them make informed decisions about their future.

1. Experience College Before You Graduate High School

Dual Credit courses are designed to introduce students to the college experience in a supportive environment. 

Students participate in college-level instruction, often including hands-on labs, practical learning, and real-world activities depending on the course. Those taking courses on one of Fleming’s campuses also become familiar with the campus environment, classrooms, and student resources. 

Students also gain early experience using Fleming’s learning management system, D2L, making the transition to college even smoother if they choose to continue their studies after graduation. 

2. Explore Careers While Building Confidence

One of the biggest advantages of Dual Credit is the opportunity to explore different career pathways before committing to a post-secondary program. 

Whether students are interested in healthcare, skilled trades, technology, business, or another field, Dual Credit allows them to experience college-level learning and determine whether a particular career path is the right fit. 

Participating in a college course while still receiving support from both their high school and Fleming College helps students build confidence in their academic abilities and better prepares them for future success. 

3. A Free Opportunity with Valuable Long-Term Benefits 

Dual Credit courses are offered at no cost to eligible senior high school students in Ontario. 

Students can earn credits that may count toward future college programs, depending on the course and the program they choose to pursue. General education and communications courses often transfer broadly, while more specialized courses may apply directly to related college programs. 

If students choose to attend another college after completing a Dual Credit course, transfer credit options may also be available. Students are encouraged to work with the receiving institution’s Transfer Credit Office to determine eligibility. 

To participate, students should speak with their high school Guidance Counsellor or Student Success team to learn which Dual Credit opportunities are available through their school board.
