Start Strong: Tips for Making the Most of a New Semester
There is a special energy at Fleming College at the beginning of the fall semester. Campuses are busy again, new connections are being made, and students are taking important steps toward their goals.
Whether you are starting college for the first time, returning after the summer or coming back to school after time away, the beginning of a semester can bring a lot of new information and experiences at once. It is exciting, but it can also take some time to find your footing.
In the video below, Fleming College Interim President Dr. Theresa Knott welcomes new and returning students and shares her advice for the semester ahead.

Here are a few ways to start the semester strong and make the most of your time at Fleming.
Give yourself time to adjust
You do not need to have everything figured out during your first week. Take some time to learn your schedule, explore your campus and become familiar with the online tools you will use throughout the semester.
Starting a new routine takes time, especially if you are attending college for the first time or returning to school after being away. Ask questions, introduce yourself to your classmates and instructors, and learn where to go when you need information or support.
Build a routine early
A little organization at the beginning of the semester can make a big difference later. Review your course outlines, record important deadlines and set aside regular time each week for studying and assignments.
Make sure your schedule also leaves room for work, family responsibilities, rest and the other things that are important to you. The routine that works for someone else may not be the right one for you.
Ask questions and seek support
Questions are a normal part of learning. If you are unsure about an assignment, course expectation or college process, ask early.
Fleming offers free tutoring and learning skills support, including course-specific tutoring and help with writing, math, time management, organization and study strategies. Student Success Advisors can also help you work through academic or personal concerns, set goals and connect with other services.
The Fleming Library is another valuable resource for research assistance, citations, academic integrity guidance and help finding reliable information.
Make connections
College is about more than completing assignments. Look for opportunities to become involved in campus life.
Student clubs, campus events, athletics, intramural sports and recreation programs can help you meet people with similar interests and try something new. Visit Fleming’s Student Government and Athletics and Recreation webpages to explore some of the ways you can get involved.
Take care of yourself
A successful semester is not only about academics. Your physical and mental well-being matter too.
Fleming students can access a range of services, including Counselling Services, Health Services, Accessible Education Services and Indigenous Student Services. You do not have to wait until you are struggling to reach out.
Keep an eye on what comes next
It is never too early to begin thinking about where your studies may take you. Fleming’s Career Services can help with career planning, job searches, résumés, cover letters and interview preparation throughout your time at the College.
The semester ahead will move quickly, so remember to recognize your progress along the way and take pride in what you accomplish. Have a great semester!
