New Chair of Board of Governors

Peterborough, ON (November 3, 2011) — The Board of Governors of Sir Sandford Fleming College elected Peter McLean as its new Chair for 2011-2012.  Mr. McLean, a Peterborough resident and businessman, joined the Board in 2008 and was re-appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council to serve a second three-year term through to August 31, 2014.   

“The role of the Board of Governors is key as the College faces new and exciting opportunities,” stated College President Tony Tilly as he congratulated Mr. McLean. “Peter’s dedication and commitment to excellent leadership will guide our Board to deliver success to students, staff and the community.”

Joan Ross, former President and CEO of the Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg and governor since 2009, was elected as Chair of the Executive Committee and serves as the Vice-Chair of the Board. 

A Fleming governor since 2008, Jim Nesbitt chairs the Finance and Property and Audit Committees.  Jim is a resident of Lindsay and is the Board’s 2nd Vice-Chair. He was also re-appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council (LGIC) to serve a second term.  

Karen Maki (Peterborough), chair of the Academic and Student Affairs Committee, is a member of the 2011-2012 Board Executive.

The following members were appointed by the Board for three-year terms beginning September 1, 2011:

  • Tim Degeer, a Chartered Accountant and partner at Dawson Gray LLP in Haliburton
  • Mary Anne Shill, a resident of Lakefield with an extensive background in health care
  • Lori Sutcliffe-Geens, a Cobourg resident and past Director of the Fleming College Foundation

Also serving on the Board of Governors are Bill Astell (appointed September 2009, Peterborough), Dr. Mark Dockstator (appointed September 2009, Peterborough / Oakville) and Judith Hayes (appointed 2006 and re-appointed 2009, Lindsay). 

The Board is also comprised of Fleming College President Tony Tilly and internal members, elected by their respective membership groups.  Lawrence (Lawrie) Gulston, the Faculty Governor, and George MacDougall, the Administrative Governor, are in their second terms.  Elane Kalavrias, the Support Staff Governor, is in her first term. Tyler Lovenuk is the Student Governor and Corey Greene the Student Observer through to the end of August 2012.

Located in the heart of Central Ontario, Fleming College has campus locations in Peterborough, Lindsay, Cobourg and Haliburton. Named for famous Canadian inventor and engineer Sir Sandford Fleming, the college features more than 100 full-time programs in Business and Technology, Continuing Education and Skilled Trades, Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences, Visual Arts, Education, Health and Wellness, and Law, Justice and Community Services. Fleming College has 6,000 full-time and 10,000 part-time students, and more than 60,000 alumni.
