Fleming College to require COVID-19 vaccination for students in residence

Published

Peterborough ON – (June 25, 2021) – Fleming is prioritizing student experience on campus and the safety of everyone in the College community by requiring students in residence to have received at least the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine for the fall semester. The mandatory vaccine policy is based on scientific data and supported by Peterborough Public Health (PPH).

“The pandemic continues to be an evolving situation, and we have always emphasized that safety is everyone’s responsibility at Fleming. The vaccination requirement for those in residence will provide peace of mind to students and their families,” said Fleming College President Maureen Adamson.

With the virus and variants remaining a deadly threat in our local communities and posing the risk of outbreaks at institutions around the country, medical data shows vaccination to be an effective public health measure. Fleming’s policy is grounded in research and recommendations from the scientific community, and it balances individual interests with occupational health and safety, human rights, privacy and access to education considerations. Fleming also supports the broader public health guidance that all students, staff, faculty and community members get fully vaccinated.

It is recommended that residence students get the vaccine 14 days prior to their move-in date. Those unable to receive a first dose before moving in, will have 14 days to get vaccinated. The College will provide support to students who require first and second doses and is working closely with PPH to coordinate access to vaccines.

The vaccine verification process will be communicated directly to students. Any student who cannot be vaccinated on medical or other grounds recognized by the Ontario Human Rights Code may request an accommodation. Fleming is committed to protection of privacy, and any information gathered will be in compliance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

The vaccine requirement applies only to the College-owned residences on campus and not the entire campus or to those living off campus. Alternative off-campus housing is available with assistance and resources through Fleming’s off-campus housing services.

In addition to the mandatory vaccination policy, other Fleming Safe measures will continue to be implemented, including masking and reduced capacity limits in shared spaces, and enhanced cleaning and sanitation of all areas.
