Fleming College hosting community consultation on Post-Secondary Partnerships Program

Published

Peterborough ON – (March 17, 2014) – Fleming College will host a community consultation next month as part of a program proposal to design and deliver post-secondary courses tailored for First Nations and Inuit students.

The Post-Secondary Partnerships Program (PSPP) from Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) replaces the Indian Studies Support Program as of April 1, 2014.

AANDC is currently accepting proposals from eligible post-secondary institutions for funding to offer the PSPP. Fleming College will submit a proposal within its commitment to supporting Indigenous education initiatives.

The funding opportunity is designed to create courses that respond specifically to the educational needs of First Nations and Inuit students and communities. Additional goals are:

– Focus on the labour market, with specific outcomes and objectives;

– Lead to high-demand jobs in the Canadian economy or within First Nation or Inuit communities (such as Band governance);

– Use innovative and efficient delivery methods to increase the availability of education in remote communities;

– Contain short duration, undergraduate level courses;

– Include funding partners with a firm commitment to monetary participation.

A key component of the proposal is consultation and support from First Nations and Inuit communities in the planning and delivery of the project, and to the specific employment needs of those communities. As such, Fleming is hosting a community consultation meeting on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sutherland Campus, 599 Brealey Dr., Peterborough. All interested parties are invited to attend.
