Fleming College Celebrates Indigenous History Month
Peterborough ON – (June 17, 2022) – Fleming College is celebrating the rich culture, contributions, and diversity of Indigenous People across the northern part of Turtle Island as Indigenous History Month continues.
Fleming’s Indigenous Perspectives Team members have planned events across all College campuses next week, June 20-24.
Monday, June 20: Students and staff will build a Teaching Lodge at the Sutherland Campus from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Teaching Lodges offer a place for students and staff to gather in a traditional Indigenous setting, where we can learn, teach, utilize Indigenous Pedagogy and hold meetings and ceremony.
A Teaching Lodge was built at the Frost Campus June 6. The last Teaching Lodge instalment will take place at the Haliburton Campus on June 27.
A guided exhibit explaining some of the treaties between Indigenous communities and Canadians will run throughout the week at the Sutherland Campus. Tours will run from 1 – 3 p.m.

Tuesday, June 21: Day of solidarity at all three campuses for National Indigenous Peoples Day.
Wednesday, June 22: Frost Campus will host a guided exhibit explaining some of the treaties between Indigenous communities and Canadians from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Sutherland Campus will host a drum making/repair workshop with Knowledge Holder Anne Taylor at 10 a.m. in the Indigenous Student Services Lounge (limited spaces available).
Thursday, June 23: Strawberry Picking from 9:30 – 11 a.m. at The Berry Patch. Strawberry pickers can drop by the Sutherland Campus’s Indigenous Student Services Lounge from 12 – 4:30 p.m. to make scone, strawberry compote and enjoy a strawberry feast.
Friday, June 24: Three Sisters planting at the new Indigenous Perspectives garden at the Sutherland Campus from 9 – 11 a.m.
There will be a Sacred Fire at the outdoor Cultural Space (Sutherland Campus) from 2 – 4 p.m.
Fleming Staff are encouraged to participate in “In Their Moccasins,” a game with quizzes and narrative branching (choose your own adventure style) elements. It is designed to build capacity for empathy for Indigenous students’ lived realities. Contributions to the game were made by Fleming Indigenous students.
This year marks an important milestone for Fleming College’s Indigenous Perspectives Designation (IPD). More than 2,000 students have now graduated with their IPD. IPD students have chosen to incorporate more in-depth knowledge of First Nation, Inuit and Métis peoples, cultures, histories, traditions, and contributions through the course of their Fleming College studies.
Fleming has also created a new logo to be used by the Indigenous Perspectives team and initiatives.
