2026 Peterborough Engineering Symposium to explore the future of Canadian nuclear technology
PETERBOROUGH, ON – (October 21, 2026) – Engineering professionals, researchers, and industry leaders will gather at Fleming College on Saturday, November 7 for the 2026 Peterborough Engineering Symposium, focusing on Canadian nuclear technology from Canadian Deuterium Uranium (CANDU) reactors to small modular reactors, fusion, and beyond.
Held at Fleming’s Sutherland Campus in Peterborough, the day-long symposium will examine the evolution of Canada’s nuclear industry and the technologies shaping its future. Presentations will focus on CANDU technology, small modular reactors (SMRs), fusion, and nuclear waste management, along with panel discussions examining the Canadian nuclear industry, the future workforce, and environmental considerations for sustainable nuclear energy.
The symposium will feature speakers from organizations including BWXT, Ontario Power Generation, Ontario Tech University, and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization. Speakers scheduled to take part include Ralph Granz and Andrew Long of BWXT; Hossam Gaber and Les Jacobs of Ontario Tech University; Sara Dolatshahi of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization; Aiman Khan of Candu Energy Inc., an AtkinsRéalis company; and Muhammad Mahad of Ontario Power Generation.
“This symposium brings together experts from across the nuclear sector to share knowledge, examine emerging technologies, and discuss the opportunities and challenges ahead,” said Dr. Fereydoon Diba, Director and Principal Researcher at Fleming College’s Centre for Applied Machine Intelligence and Integration Technologies (CAMIIT). “As Canada looks to expand its clean energy capacity, these conversations are important to advancing innovation, strengthening collaboration, and preparing the skilled workforce needed for the next generation of nuclear technology.”
Registration begins at 9 a.m., with symposium presentations beginning at 10 a.m. The program also includes College tours and opportunities to visit information tables before concluding at 4 p.m.
The 2026 Peterborough Engineering Symposium is organized by the IEEE Peterborough Section, Professional Engineers Ontario – Peterborough Chapter, Fleming CAMIIT, and Brilliant Energy Institute – Ontario Tech University.
