PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Indigenous Environmental Sciences Pathway Program will help Indigenous learners transition to college education by bridging the gap between post-secondary education and educational aspirations. The program will offer courses that integrate environmental sciences and foundational courses with Indigenous knowledge and perspectives. Students will join a group of like-minded Indigenous students and receive guidance from faculty, Knowledge Keepers, and academic advisors. After completion of the program, students will receive a Statement of Achievement.

The program will be open to a diverse range of Indigenous applicants who may not be prepared for direct admission into a college program, including recent high school graduates, mature students, applicants whose grades do not reflect their academic potential or would like additional support as they transition into post- secondary education. The program will be open to any Indigenous student who is preparing for post- secondary education and needs to upgrade or seeks support transitioning, including students who did not graduate from high school as grades are not always reflective of their academic potential.

  1. Intro to Indigenous Environmental Studies – INDG 81
    • In this multidisciplinary course, students will explore a variety of topics focusing on environment and ecology with an Indigenous perspective & worldview. This course will provide students with the tools that enable them to blend Indigenous & Western approached to sciences, community engagement, environmental resource management/assessment, mining, aquaculture, fish & wildlife, while critically examining health and historical impacts.

  2. Introduction to Indigenous Studies - INDG 49
    • This course is an introduction to the study of Indigenous (First Nations, Metis, and Inuit) peoples in Canada. Students will explore the complex historical and contemporary relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. The course will also guide students to begin to understand the diversity and depth of Indigenous societies, worldviews, and knowledge through a multi-disciplinary lens.

  3. Communications I - COMM 201
    • Communications I for Environmental and Natural Resource Studies is an introductory course that provides a foundation in college-level communications. In this course, students learn to read critically, write appropriately for a variety of audiences, conduct research, cite references, revise for clarity and correctness, and present those results in various formats. In seminars, labs, and modules students will engage in both independent and collaborative activities, including the development and presentation of a research assignment to help them become more effective communicators in academic and professional contexts within the field of Environmental and Natural Resource Studies.

  4. Applied Mathematics in Natural Resource Sciences - MATH 63
    • This course will enable students to apply specific mathematical concepts and acquire foundation skills important in the Natural Resource and Environmental Sciences. It is designed to complement and reinforce learning within other first semester courses and program areas.

  5. Career Preparation – APST 154
    • This course is designed to equip students with the skills needed for their work search and to develop and enhance career planning skills. Students will learn how to write competitive job search documents, interview with confidence, and will develop and use their career portfolio as a tool to identify and incorporate career goals into the job search process.

Pilot program and the cost of the program for Indigenous students is $0. Living expenses would be excluded.

Between 1 and 5 credits from the pathway program can be applied to Fleming College programs. Taking this pathway can lead you to programs such as:
