Wayne Smith
Wayne has taught the Woody Plant Propagation course (or “How to Grow Tree Seedlings in Greenhouses”) at Fleming College since 2011. When he is not busy at Fleming College, Wayne operates a forestry consulting company specializing in silviculture monitoring and on-site training courses for tree nurseries.
Wayne has been a licensed professional forester in the province of Ontario since 1980. Since graduating from Lakehead University's Forestry program in 1978, he has been involved with tree seedling production, applied research, technology transfer, tree nursery management, and silviculture. Wayne is experienced in tree nursery operations, reforestation, afforestation, and land reclamation. He has developed and taught courses in silviculture effectiveness monitoring across Ontario, as well as on-site tree nursery courses in Ontario, USA, and China.
Wayne was also instrumental in the development of software and field procedures for Ontario's forest regeneration survey system (Site Occupancy Index - Silviculture Treatment Assessment & Reporting System - SOiSTARS). And as the Forestry Manager for a microbiology lab in Timmins, he was involved with developing operational systems for assessing the quality of tree seedlings in Ontario, and for inoculating tree seedlings with beneficial microbes.
When there is spare time, Wayne enjoys golf, hockey, cross-country skiing, canoeing, and, spending time with family, including two new grandsons.
