Perioperative Nursing Certificate
Adding another specialization to your resume can open the doors to more employment opportunities and greater challenges. The program includes extensive lab practice and clinical field experience as well as evidenced based theory. The certificate has been designed in accordance with the Standards of Practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario, and in alignment with the guidelines and Standards of Practice of the Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC).
Is This You?
As an RN or RPN with a current Certificate of Competence, you will gain specialized training the pre, post, and intra-operative phase of the surgical process. The program is intended to prepare RNs and RPNs to function effectively in the operating room or perioperative setting as part of the team.
Graduates are employed as perioperative nurses in surgical settings including teaching hospitals, community hospitals, and clinics such as ambulatory and plastic surgery clinics.
Required Skills and Pre-requisites
Recent RN and RPN graduate students will require a Certificate of Competence to participate in the Clinical placement courses.
Certificates must be completed within five years. Once you have completed all certificate requirements, please contact us again for your official certification.

Periop Nrsg.: Introduction to Perioperative Nursing (NRSG064)
Explore the fundamental principles and practices of perioperative nursing. Gain insight into the various professional roles and accountabilities of the health care team in the O.R. including those of the scrub and circulating nurse. Study the design and management of the O.R., as well as safety, infection control, and the application of aseptic technique. You will learn to scrub, gown, glove, and mask using strict aseptic technique. Lab practice will include draping and skin preparation. You will be introduced to the selection and use of surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment used in the surgical suite.
Periop Nrsg.: Development of Perioperative Nursing Techniques (NRSG047)
Develop greater perioperative nursing skills and techniques. You will build competence in preparation for surgical intervention, such as positioning, anaesthetic induction, and measures for perioperative quality assurance. Environmental hazards and the responsibilities of the nurse will be examined. You will also gain an understanding of perioperative-related pharmaco-therapeutics, pre-, intra-, and post-operative phases as well as strategies for working in this high-tension, team-driven environment. Prerequisite: Introduction to Perioperative Nursing (NRSG064).

Periop Nrsg.: Specialized Nursing Skills for Caring for the Perioperative Patient (NRSG106)
Focus on the more specialized and complex perioperative nursing situations. Explore the nursing process as the nurse anticipates and deals with situations in the recovery of the anaesthetized client. We will debate cultural values, beliefs, and practices and examine the safe application of nursing principles and techniques as they apply to clients undergoing various kinds of surgery, i.e. orthopaedic, plastic, E.N.T., and ophthalmic. Prerequisite: Development of Perioperative Nursing Techniques (NRSG 47).

Periop Nrsg: Perioperative Clinical Placement 1 (NRSG187)
Integrate theory with clinical practice in the operating room theatre with emphasis on the role of the scrub and circulating nurses. Demonstrate strict aseptic techniques in the care of the surgical patient and practice competencies in the use of instrumentation and participate in all phases of an individual's surgical experience. Pre-requisite: Specialized Nursing Skills for the Perioperative Patient (NRSG106)
Periop Nrsg: Perioperative Clinical Placement 2 (NRSG188)
Integrate theory and clinical practice in a more independent manner. You will assume various roles in the pre-, post-, and intraoperative phase with the guidance and support of a perioperative nurse. You will be expected to demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills as a member of the team. Prerequisite: NRSG 187 Perioperative Clinical Placement 1
