Mandatory Courses

Medical Terminology (HLTH056)

Develop the language required to communicate effectively in a medical setting. Medical terminology, word structure as well as diagnostic procedures and pharmacology related to twelve body systems will be studied.

Working and Communicating in a Medical Setting (HLTH126)

Learn theory and techniques for successful verbal and non-verbal communication and effective work skills, including communication systems, ethical behaviour, confidentiality, stress and time management, hospital organization, and human relations.

Behaviour Management & Crisis Intervention (SOCI007)

Become confident using effective conflict management and communication strategies in an interactive setting. Best practices in care-giving situations will be studied along with the impact of personal values, institutional settings, and other factors of dysfunctional behaviour. Self-care and self-evaluation of the care-giver will also be emphasized.

Medical Office Procedures (BUSN057)

Study the administrative and clerical functions including patient reception, scheduling appointments appropriate to patient needs, telephone procedures, medical records management and charting of progress notes, verbal and nonverbal communications with patients, computerization and the medical office, financial records, personal conduct, medical ethics and law. The Canada Health Act will be introduced as well as OHIP and the principles of OHIP medical billing.

Understanding Medical Tests for Medical Office Staff (HLTH058)

With an understanding of medical testing you can help explain the test and its purpose to a patient, prepare the patient before the test, and give proper care during and after the test, and understand expected results. Risks, complications, and special concerns are covered. Strongly Recommended: Medical Terminology HLTH 56.

Essentials in Health Records Management (HLTH151)

"Gain an understanding of the hospital and medical staff organization, patient record content, procedures in filing, numbering and retention of patient records, qualitative analysis, release of information, forms control and design, indexes and registers, reimbursements, regulatory and accrediting agencies, and alternate health care delivery systems. NOTE: The passing grade for this course is 65%. "

Medical OHIP Billing (HLTH152)

Gain an understanding of the basic principles of efficient Health Claim Billing in Ontario. Learn how to use the Schedule of Benefits and Preambles of the Ministry of Health, as well as the basics of computerized billing. Pre-requisite: Medical Terminology.

Medical Keyboarding (COMP316)

Enrich your typing skills to suit a medical environment by incorporating medical keyboarding, advanced keyboarding, medical language, grammatical and office skills. Work with case histories, a variety of medical reports, technical terminology and timed writings. Targeted exercises will increase your knowledge of terms you will encounter on the job and will improve your keyboarding speed and accuracy. A brief introduction to Medical Transcription is included with this course. You must have an existing typing speed of 25 to 30 words per minute. You will receive information about purchasing your course manual at the beginning of the course.
