Cybersecurity

The internet continues to evolve at a rapid pace and the data of organizations have never been more vulnerable than now. Cyber attacks are costing organizations hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars per occurrence, and happen so often they are often featured in the news. There is a worldwide shortage of cybersecurity professionals as every organization seeks ways to make their data more secure.

Once students graduate from this eight-month, full-time graduate certificate program, they will be equipped with skills to protect their organization's computers, servers, networks, and applications from breaches and unauthorized access. The courses in the program provide skills in detecting breaches, computer forensics, threat hunting, and penetration testing.

The program is highly interdisciplinary and includes aspects of law, policy, human factors, ethics and risk management. Focused on cyber-defense training, the program prepares students to deploy security techniques while considering how an intruder may approach an organization's systems.

Upon graduation, students acquire skills relevant to leadership roles in cybersecurity across a variety of industries and businesses.

The Information and Communications Technology Council of Canada estimates that 10,800 to 21,600 additional cybersecurity professionals will be needed in Canada by 2025. SLC states that cybersecurity jobs are difficult to fill while salaries are above average, providing graduates with opportunities to grow their careers in the information technology industry.

Graduates can expect to find employment in either the public or private sectors, including government, education, healthcare, military, financial, research, consulting, logistics and many other industries.

Graduates may choose to pursue the following certifications upon completion of additional exams and/or related work experience to qualify:

• CISSP Certified Information Systems Security Professional
• CEH Certified Ethical Hacker
• CISA Certified Information Systems Auditor (by ISACA)
• GIAC Global Information Assurance Certification (by SANS)
• CompTIA Security+ Certification
• Certified Network Defender

• Detect anomalous activity and indicators of compromise on networks and computer systems.
• Monitor and remediate security events using Security Information and Event Management systems.
• Conduct reconnaissance, penetration testing and security assessments.
• Investigate computer crimes and recover and preserve digital evidence.
• Proactively identify advanced persistent cyber threats through threat hunting.
• Assess current cybersecurity threats and propose security enhancement solutions.
• Implement security controls for cloud computing environments while addressing legal and data governance requirements.
• Secure and harden IT network infrastructure and Windows and Linux server platforms.
• Manage cybersecurity incidents by prioritizing, containing and mitigating attacks.
• Develop and communicate actionable threat intelligence.
• Formulate cybersecurity strategies that contribute to business objectives and address cybersecurity and business risks.
• Implement cybersecurity enhancement solutions that comply with company priorities, security policies, ethical standards and industry regulations.

Two or three year College Diploma or a University Degree or equivalent.

Alternate Admission Assessment to Post-graduate Certificate Programs

Domestic applicants who do not meet the minimum academic admission requirement to a post-graduate certificate program may request to have their application assessed through an alternate admission assessment. Applicants must have applied through OCAS and submit the required documentation for an alternate admission assessment.

The program is full-time and delivered in person at the Kingston Campus.
