Our students learn how to:
- Teach children to manage behaviour and learn adaptive skills.
- Assist people with intellectual disabilities to access community resources, learn new skills, live more independently.
- Teach youth at risk to improve social skills, manage interfering behaviours, meet treatment goals.
- Support persons with mental health challenges to reduce stress, build self-management skills, organize daily activities.
- Assist clients with acquired brain injuries to learn functional skills and develop life skills.
- Work with offenders in correctional facilities to build positive skills and behaviours.
- Recognize addiction and ways to prevent/manage recovery.
If you want to work in the growing and highly specialized field of applied behaviour analysis, the Behavioural Science program is where you want to be. For over four decades, the Behavioural Science program has trained students to work front-line with a wide range of client populations in a variety of areas within the human services field. Students are taught how to develop and implement behavioural interventions to teach skills to clients and/or reduce challenging behaviours.
Students should have a strong desire to work with populations with complex behavioural, cognitive, emotional and/or psychological issues; comfortable with disruptive behaviours/intellectual challenges; prepared to complete practicum placements with any client populations under career opportunities. The program trains treatment options applicable to any individual with challenges, not one specific client population.
This is not a generalist counselling/psychology program; students should be interested in applied behaviour analysis.

Other Requirements
Criminal Background Check
- CPIC Criminal Background Check required for programs with field/clinical placements.
- Certain convictions may prevent participation in placements and completion of the program.
- Student is responsible for the CBC and Vulnerable Sector Screening (OPP).
- May need to be renewed every 3-6 months.
- Applicants with records are advised to contact the Associate/Campus Dean.
- Four field placements provide experience and practical training.
- The first two placements take place in an educational setting to meet outcomes before other settings.
- In year two, students complete a Field Placement Request Form with preferred interests for third-year placements.
- Faculty assign placements and the Student Placement Facilitator arranges them.
- A site interview is required for each placement.
- In year three, if academic requirements are met, placements may be in group homes, community agencies, hospitals, correctional facilities or schools.
