Webinar Wednesday Recap: Visual and Creative Arts Diploma and Arts Certificates
Last week, we hosted a Webinar Wednesday session highlighting our Visual and Creative Arts (VCA) Diploma and Certificate programs at the Haliburton School of Art + Design. If you couldn’t join us live, don’t worry. Below are some key highlights from the session, along with the full recording to watch at your convenience.
Fleming College’s arts programs at the Haliburton campus are recognized for their hands-on, studio-based approach, small class sizes, and immersive creative environment. During the session, prospective students connected with Romina Amou Zadeh from the Student Recruitment team, VCA Program Coordinator Rose Pearson, and Operations and Programing Manager Erin Lynch to learn more about program structure, the student experience, and the range of creative pathways available after graduation.
WHY STUDY AT FLEMING’S HALIBURTON SCHOOL OF ART + DESIGN
Fleming’s arts programs are designed to support students at every stage of their creative journey. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist, you’ll build practical skills through intensive, hands-on studio work across a variety of mediums.
With a focus on experimentation, portfolio development, and real-world application, students graduate prepared for creative careers, entrepreneurship, or further education in fine arts.
THREE KEY TAKEAWAYS
1. Explore before you specialize
VCA begins with a comprehensive foundation year delivered over two semesters. During this time, students build core skills in areas such as design, drawing, digital media, and art history, while also experimenting with a wide range of mediums through hands-on studio courses.
By the end of the foundation year, students have developed both technical skills and a clearer understanding of their artistic direction. They then choose a specialization to complete their diploma through an intensive certificate program. Specializations include ceramics, drawing and painting, fibre arts, glassblowing, and jewellery essentials.
2. Immerse yourself in hands-on, studio-based learning
Learning in Haliburton is a fully immersive art experience. Certificate programs are delivered in an intensive 15-week format, with full days spent in the studio and access to facilities beyond class time.
Students work closely with practicing artists, develop technical skills quickly, and gain experience using professional tools and equipment. This hands-on approach ensures graduates leave with both confidence and real-world skills.
With the addition of the new on-campus residence, students can now live steps away from their studios, making it easier to stay fully engaged in their creative work. This added convenience enhances the immersive experience while also making the Haliburton campus more accessible for students coming from outside the region.
3. Flexible pathways with strong creative outcomes
Students can take a certificate as a standalone program or complete it as the second year of the diploma. No portfolio or prior experience is required, making the programs accessible while still offering room for growth.
Graduates leave with a professional portfolio and can pursue opportunities such as starting their own creative business, exhibiting their work, or continuing into Bachelor of Fine Arts programs through articulation agreements.
