Webinar Wednesday Recap: How to Apply, How to Accept & The Admissions Process 

Applying to college is an exciting step, but between applications, admission requirements, deadlines, conditional offers and tuition deposits, there can be a lot to keep track of along the way. 

In this Webinar Wednesday session, Shannon from Fleming College’s Student Recruitment team was joined by Rachel, Admissions Officer and Technical Lead with the Office of the Registrar, to walk prospective students through the admissions process from application to enrolment. 

Whether you’re getting ready to submit your application, waiting for an offer or wondering what happens after you accept, here are some of the key things you need to know. 

Understanding the Admissions Process 

The admissions process begins well before you receive an offer. Applicants need to choose their programs, submit an application through Ontario Colleges, provide the necessary transcripts and documentation, and make sure they meet the admission requirements for their chosen program. 

Once an offer arrives, there are a few more important steps, including accepting your offer, paying your tuition deposit, meeting any outstanding conditions and completing the necessary enrolment requirements before classes begin. 

Keeping track of deadlines throughout this process is important, especially when applying to highly competitive programs.

1. Start With Your Application and Admission Requirements 

For domestic applicants, applications to Fleming College are submitted through Ontario Colleges. Applicants can select up to three programs at one college and up to five programs in total. 

As part of your application, you’ll provide information about your previous education and arrange to have the required transcripts submitted. Applicants who have attended schools in Ontario can request their transcripts through Ontario Colleges. Additional fees may apply when ordering transcripts, and the Ontario Colleges application fee is $150 per academic year. 

Before applying, take some time to review the admission requirements listed on the webpage for the program you’re interested in. Most Fleming programs require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, along with specific prerequisite courses. Graduate certificate programs require previous post-secondary education, while some programs may have additional admission requirements, such as a portfolio or interview. 

Still completing a required course? You may still be able to apply. Applicants currently enrolled in a prerequisite can provide proof of registration and may receive a conditional offer. 

Fleming also offers pathways that can help students meet admission requirements, including Academic Upgrading and Pre-Health Sciences Pathway programs. 

2. Know Your Deadlines and Understand Your Offer 

Deadlines are an important part of the admissions process. 

Applications for the next academic year open in October, with November 1 being the earliest date that some offers may be issued. February 1 is the equal consideration date. This means applicants who submit their application by February 1 receive equal consideration for admission, which is particularly important for highly competitive programs. 

Applications can still be submitted after February 1, but they are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. If a program is already full, applicants may be placed on a waitlist or may want to consider another available intake. 

Once you receive an offer, make sure you understand whether it is conditional or unconditional. 

If your offer has no conditions, you’ll need to accept it through Ontario Colleges and pay the required fees by the deadlines provided. 

If you receive a conditional offer, your offer letter will outline the requirements you still need to complete. Updated transcripts can be submitted through Ontario Colleges or sent directly to Fleming by the academic institution. Official hard-copy transcripts can also be brought to the College in a sealed envelope from the issuing institution. 

For most offers of admission, May 1 is the confirmation deadline. If you miss the deadline and your offer is revoked, contact Fleming’s Admissions team as soon as possible. If space remains in the program, Admissions may be able to reinstate the offer so you can accept it through your Ontario Colleges account. 

3. Accepting Your Offer Is Only the Beginning 

Once you’ve accepted your offer, there are still a few steps to complete before you officially become a Fleming student. 

Your tuition deposit is generally due approximately two months before your program begins, while the remaining tuition balance is typically due about one month before classes start. Fleming’s tuition deposit is $250 and must be paid by all applicants, including students applying for OSAP or receiving sponsorship funding. 

Approximately one month before the fee deadline, students receive a fee notification outlining the amount due, payment deadline and instructions for making a payment. Payment options include online banking and debit or credit card payments through your Student Centre. 

Students applying for financial assistance can also explore OSAP, sponsorship funding, scholarships and bursaries. 

If you have a conditional offer, make sure your conditions are cleared as early as possible. Your fees must be paid and your admission conditions lifted before you can access your timetable. Timetables are generally available approximately one month before classes begin once these requirements have been completed. 

Students will also receive an enrolment task approximately one month before their program begins. 

One of the simplest ways to stay on top of everything? Check your email regularly and make sure your contact information is current. Fleming uses the email address provided through your Ontario Colleges application to send important information about your application, offer, fees and deadlines. 

Applying With International Education 

Domestic applicants who completed some or all of their education internationally should also submit their international transcripts through Ontario Colleges. 

If you have a World Education Services (WES) or International Credential Assessment Service of Canada (ICAS) evaluation, it is recommended that you include it so Fleming’s Admissions team can review your previous education. 

Depending on where your education was completed, you may also need to meet an English language requirement. Fleming’s website provides information about countries and education that may be exempt from additional English language requirements.
