Webinar Wednesday Recap: Financial Aid

Published

We recently hosted a Webinar Wednesday session focused on one of the most common questions prospective students have: How am I going to pay for college? During the session, Financial Aid Officer Amy D’Silva shared practical advice about OSAP, scholarships, bursaries, work-study opportunities, and the resources available to help students plan for their education with confidence.

Three Key Takeaways

1. Financial Support Is Available

One of the biggest concerns for prospective students is how they’ll pay for college. During the webinar, Fleming’s Financial Aid team highlighted the variety of funding options available to help make post-secondary education more affordable.

For eligible students, the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) can provide a combination of grants, which do not need to be repaid, and loans, which are repayable after graduation. Funding is based on factors such as educational costs, financial need, and personal circumstances.

In addition to OSAP, students may also qualify for entrance scholarships, bursaries, external awards, community scholarships, and other funding opportunities. The key message was clear: don’t assume college is out of reach financially. There are resources available to help.

2. Apply Early and Stay Informed

One of the most important pieces of advice shared during the webinar was to start the financial aid process as early as possible.

Applying early gives students time to gather documents, understand their funding eligibility, and avoid potential delays. The Financial Aid team encouraged students to monitor their email regularly, pay attention to tuition deposit deadlines, and review their OSAP application carefully to ensure information is accurate.

Students were also reminded that their tuition deposit remains their responsibility and must be paid by the deadline to secure their seat in a program. Missing important deadlines can impact enrollment, particularly in high-demand programs.

3. You’re Not Navigating the Process Alone

Paying for college can feel overwhelming, especially for first-time applicants. Throughout the webinar, Fleming’s Financial Aid team emphasized that support is available every step of the way.

Whether students have questions about OSAP, scholarships, bursaries, budgeting, repayment options, or changes to their financial situation, the Financial Aid Office is available to help. The team also highlighted additional opportunities such as Fleming’s Work Study Program, which allows students to gain valuable work experience while earning income during their studies.

From application support to financial planning, students have access to resources designed to help them focus on their education and achieve their goals.
