Two Fleming Phoenix Student Athletes receive provincial recognition
Peterborough, ON (October 23, 2025) – Two members of the Fleming Phoenix Women’s Rugby Sevens team have received provincial recognition for their athletic abilities this season.
Ashley Smith was one of 13 student athletes from across the province recognized as a League All-Star by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA). Shelby Hubert was named as one of the eight members of the OCAA Women’s Rugby Sevens League All-Rookie Team. The OCAA announced those recognized on October 22, 2025.
Smith, a second-year student in the Resource Drilling Technician program at the Frost campus in Lindsay, and a native of Ravenna, Ontario, was a wing on the Phoenix Varsity Women’s Rugby Sevens Team. During her second season on the team, Smith played in all 14 games and scored two tries.
Smith is known for being a fierce competitor as a utility player who excels at playing three plus positions. On the field, she is a fearsome defensive tackle, while off the field her contagious laugh and positive spirit uplift her teammates.
This was the first season for Hubert, who comes to Fleming from Bowmanville, Ontario. Hubert, who is in her first year of Fleming’s Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training program, was a wing on the team and played in all 14 games.
Hubert’s background in football was instrumental in her transition to rugby, as her athleticism and superior tackling ability made her a highly effective player. Her positivity and team-first mentality motivated her teammates throughout the season. This is a well-deserved recognition for both Smith and Hubert. Rugby is a sport that requires grit, determination, and hard work, and both student athletes exemplify these characteristics.
