Travel and Tourism students heading to Jamaica

Published

Students in the Travel and Tourism program will have the opportunity to visit Jamaica in April 2011 to learn about the travel industry and take part in volunteer work.

About 25 students heard a presentation on Nov. 5 from program coordinator Patti Watson and four students who were part of a similar trip last April.

The group stayed at an all-inclusive resort in Montego Bay – the Iberostar Rose Hall.

The students spent two days volunteering in the community, working in a soup kitchen and working with schoolchildren. The rest of the time was spent on program-related activities: hearing a presentation from a destination representative, completing a hotel inspection and taking part in tours such as snorkelling, parasailing or ziplining.

The volunteer work, which could be used as credit for work placement hours, was rewarding for the students. The small, hot soup kitchen fed 500 people every week.

And while the Fleming students taught the schoolchildren about Canada, in return, they received an education from the children on life in Jamaica.

The 2011 trip is planned for April 24-30 with room for 20 fourth semester Travel and Tourism students. Each student pays about $1,800 for the trip.

Watch for upcoming fundraising activities from the Travel and Tourism students, who will be raising money for the soup kitchen and collecting supplies for the Jamaican students.
