Things to Know as a Fleming Student: A Guide for New Students
Whether you’re packing your bags for residence or commuting from home, welcome to Fleming College! Starting college is exciting, nerve-wracking, and full of possibilities. That’s why we asked one of our current students to share their experience and offer tips for navigating your first semester.
Spoiler alert: it starts with showing up (and saying “Hi!”).
My name is Chloe Thomas and I’m enrolled in Fleming College’s Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training program and these are my tips for new students!
From One Student to Another: You’ve Got This
The first few weeks of college can feel like a whirlwind. Between a new schedule, new faces, and new responsibilities, there’s a lot to take in. But you’re not alone. Everyone’s figuring it out just like you.
That’s why orientation is the best place to start. Not only will you get to explore your campus and meet your faculty, but you’ll also get practical advice and support from day one. Plus, it’s a great way to make friends before classes even start!
Orientation made such a difference for me. I met people I still hang out with today and I knew where to go on my first day, which helped a lot.
Making Friends at Fleming
Let’s be real… making friends in a new place can be tough. But here’s the good news: everyone on campus is looking to connect! Whether you’re naturally outgoing or a little shy, there are tons of opportunities to meet people at Fleming in class and on campus.
From student clubs and campus events to sports teams and study groups, there’s something for everyone.
Want to meet people with similar interests? Try joining a club.
Want to push yourself out of your comfort zone? Attend an event or two, you might be surprised who you click with.
Your campus student association supports all these opportunities.
Say hi to the person next to you. That one conversation can lead to so much more.
What’s Life Like in Peterborough?
New to ‘PTBO’? You’re going to love it here.
One of the best things about the city is its strong student community, with lots of cozy places to study, affordable eats, and outdoor adventures. Whether you’re exploring downtown or watching the sunset by the lake, it won’t take long to feel at home.
There’s always something to do, and Peterborough has such a chill, welcoming vibe (pssst…check out the video series I made for Fleming’s social media channels showing you what to do in Peterborough, Ontario!).
Final Thoughts
Your Fleming experience is what you make of it. There will be challenges, but there will also be a lot of growth, laughter, and moments that stick with you long after graduation.
