Peterborough ON – (Feb. 15, 2018) – Teams of emergency responders will battle it out in the ultimate fitness challenge for the First Responders Cup taking place on Saturday, April 14 at the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre.

Hosted by faculty member Jodi van Engen and students in Fleming College’s Pre-Service Firefighter, Paramedic, Customs Border Services and Police Foundations programs, the event features six-person co-ed teams that are given eight different first responder fitness challenges to complete over eight hours (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.). The team with the fastest cumulative time over all eight circuits will win the cup.

The event is a fundraiser for the Canadian Mental Health Association, Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge Branch (CMHA KPR). This is the second year Fleming students and faculty are hosting the First Responders Cup. Last year the event raised $5,500.

The students are looking for teams to enter the fitness challenge. The cost is $300 to register a team with all funds going to CMHA KPR. To register a team, visit: https://raceroster.com/events/2018/16057/2nd-annual-first-responders-cup.

Students initiated the First Responders Cup in 2017 after taking a mental health class that discussed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in the policing profession. The students wanted to eliminate stigma around the topic and help bring awareness to the community.

The students are encouraging spectators to come out and watch the event and learn more about mental health services in the community.
