Innovative Floating Wetland Systems installed to improve water quality

Published

This news release was issued by City of Kawartha Lakes on June 12, 2013.

On May 31st, representatives from C&M Aquatic, the Centre for Alternative Wastewater Treatment (CAWT) at Fleming College and City of Kawartha Lakes Water & Wastewater staff installed a series of PhytoLinks™ in Coboconk and Lindsay. These installations are part of the Showcasing Water Innovations project established in 2012 with the Ministry of the Environment.

PhytoLinks™ is an engineered floating treatment wetland system which was developed by C&M to improve water quality and enhance the natural habitat for fish and other aquatic species. Once the quick-attach modules are in place, C&M hydro seeds the links with native plants; these plants trap ‘undesirable nutrients’ (such as phosphorous and eColi) in their root systems.

Interpretive signage will be installed later this month at the Old Mill site in Lindsay and in Coboconk at the Beach Park. For more information, WRAIN will be at the Coboconk Water Summit on June 14th and 15th to answer questions or you can visit www.wrain.ca<http://www.wrain.ca>
