Information Update |COVID-19 Update from College President Maureen Adamson – March 17, 2020
This message is sent on behalf of President Maureen Adamson
Peterborough ON – (March 17, 2020) – Each day the COVID-19 situation changes rapidly. This morning, a state of emergency was declared by Premier Doug Ford, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced further measures as the entire country deals with this unprecedented crisis.
At Fleming, we continue to take proactive measures to protect our community, adapt teaching and learning to remote or alternative formats and support our students and employees.
There are several new developments:
- Faculty continue to work on plans for alternative delivery methods for our programs and will be in contact with students by Friday, March 20.
- We have made the difficult decision to close our Student Residences and to require all students to move out by Friday, March 20 at 3 p.m. Alternative arrangements have been made for International students and others who are in exceptional circumstances. Students in residence were advised of the closure earlier today.
- All campuses in Peterborough, Lindsay, Norwood and Haliburton are closed to the public with restricted access on a very limited basis. People who need access to the buildings are being screened through a small number of access points and must sign in and out.
- The Cobourg Campus is closed with no access to the classrooms or offices. Access to Fleming employees is available through phone, web and email.
- Although our buildings are effectively closed with controlled access in place right now, we will be further reducing access to our buildings throughout the week. Students should not come to campus until further notice. More information will be shared with employees tomorrow.
- Services delivered through our Employment offices in Peterborough (CREW) and Haliburton are now available via phone, web and email only. Physical locations are closed.
There are also many decisions under consideration right now. We are working through various alternatives and scenarios on several important issues, such as the status of the Spring semester scheduled to begin on May 4, the financial impacts on students (OSAP, payment deadlines and deposits), and the impact on our upcoming convocation ceremonies. On many of these issues, we are working with Colleges Ontario and the provincial government.
We will continue to keep you informed through regular updates on our website www.flemingcollege.ca/COVID19. Please forward any questions to COVID19@flemingcollege.ca
Thank you again for your patience as we work together through these uncharted waters. Please be safe, practice healthy prevention measures and be sure to take care of each other.
Sincerely,
Maureen Adamson
President, Fleming College
