Fleming Phoenix Loggersports Hosts 40th Annual Competition
Lindsay, ON (October 29, 2024) – Members of the community are invited to come out and help celebrate 40 years of logging heritage, competition and fun at the annual Fleming Phoenix loggersports competition.
The 40th anniversary of the loggersports competition takes place on Saturday, November 2 at the Loggersports Field at the Frost Campus in Lindsay and members of the Fleming Phoenix team are excited to put their skills to the test.
Admission to the competition is free and members of the public can come out and see events that include log throwing, wood chopping, pole climbing, and axe throwing.
Opening ceremonies begin at 8 a.m., with the ceremonial “cookie cut” kicking off the event. In honour of the 40th anniversary of the event, this year’s cookie cutters are siblings Jennifer and Jim Hermer, children of Frank Hermer, one of the founders of Fleming’s loggersports. Jennifer is currently the Academic Chair for Fleming’s School of Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences (SENRS). Jim is a Fleming graduate who has worked for more than 25 years in arboriculture, starting with the City of Kawartha Lakes and currently for the Town of Ajax.
The loggersports competition will kick off at 8:30 a.m. and run until 4 p.m. A blasting demonstration will also take place at 1 p.m. as the competition coincides with Fleming’s Open House.
The Fleming Phoenix will compete against schools including McGill University, University of New Brunswick, Dalhousie University, Lakehead University, University of Toronto, and Algonquin College.
The competition falls under the Canadian Intercollegiate Lumberjacking Association (CILA).
