Fleming ECE students welcome families to 2019 Interactive Learning with Children and Families program

Published

Peterborough ON – (September 19, 2019) Fleming College’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) students are preparing to welcome children and their families/caregivers to the 2019 Interactive Learning with Children and Families Program held in the Mount Community Centre in Peterborough.

The program is designed for children between one (walking) and six years of age along with their families/caregivers. This project provides an opportunity for second year ECE students to apply their learning as they build community and alliances with families. Thinking together about children’s learning and creating pedagogical documentation will support ECE students to deepen their understanding of education in the early years, and the complexities of how children learn and make meaning of their world.

Throughout the project, faculty guide students to consider current research and approaches that support children’s learning, holistic development and well-being. Students will think deeply about children’s questions and curiosity, and design experiences with authentic materials, both in the beautiful indoor space and in the surrounding natural environment. Children and families will be encouraged to actively explore and research these materials and spaces.

The Ministry of Education’s How Does Learning Happen?, Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years (2014) and the College of Early Childhood Educators Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice (2017) will be used as guiding documents for this project. Each child’s learning will be documented and a portfolio will be shared with them and their family.

The program operates Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday mornings between the first week of October and the first week of December 2019. Families can register for one morning a week from 9:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. depending on availability of space.

The program is free, healthy snacks for children and coffee or tea for parents will be provided. The program is located at The Mount Community Centre Austin Doran Hall, 1545 Monaghan Road, Peterborough.
