Fleming College to receive provincial funding for experiential learning opportunities

Published

Peterborough ON – (July 24, 2018) Fleming College will receive new funding to further its extensive programming in experiential learning from the provincial government’s Career Ready Fund.

As part of the provincial government’s Career Kick-Start Strategy, the Career Ready Fund helps publicly assisted colleges and universities, employers and other organizations create experiential learning opportunities for postsecondary students and recent graduates.

“Fleming College has a high degree of programs that offer experiential learning for students and with support from the Career Ready Fund, students and new graduates will have even more opportunities to gain meaningful hands-on experience that will better prepare them for their future careers,” said Tom Weegar, Vice-President, Academic at Fleming College. “The funding will help us provide new or enhanced initiatives for students in programs where these experiences may not have previously been available to ensure every student participates in some sort of experiential learning.”

Fleming College will receive $350,000 from the Career Kick-Start Strategy, with plans to launch new initiatives with the provincial funds that include:

  • International or remote block placements based on the expressed needs of the community
  • Two integrated service-learning courses, which culminate with a service-learning trip
  • Standardization and expansion of co-op experiences
  • Student consulting opportunities in the computer engineering and computer security programs
  • Cultivation of Indigenous placement sites
  • Cultivation of tools to support accessibility in placement sites

“Experiential learning is a vital part of many programs here at Fleming College and we take pride in providing both academic credit and on-the-job experience,” continued Weegar. “These programs provide opportunity to obtain specialized skills that will be valued by future employers.”
