Fleming College the silver recipient of CICan Indigenous Education Excellence Award

Published

Peterborough ON – (April 29, 2021) Fleming College is honoured to be chosen by Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) as the silver recipient of the Indigenous Education Excellence Award.

Candidates from across the country for this award had to meet a number of criteria:

  • Institutional commitment to making Indigenous education a priority
  • Relationship building with Indigenous communities
  • Respect for intellectual and cultural traditions
  • Understanding and reciprocity among Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples
  • Services and learning environments that are Indigenous-centred and holistic

“This recognition is a reaffirmation of the work we’ve put in over the last few years,” said Maureen Adamson, Fleming College President. “Institutions across Canada have signed CICan’s Indigenous Education Protocol as a commitment to making Indigenous education a priority. What I believe sets us apart is our vision of making Fleming College a welcoming place for all. It is not something we take lightly, and it’s a key commitment in our strategic plan.”

In 2010, Fleming had 35 students who self-identified as First Nations, Métis and Inuit; by the 2019/20 academic year, that number had risen to 614. This increase is the result of Indigenous and academic leadership at Fleming to actively create an inclusive environment that’s an academic home for all.

Some other recent changes at Fleming include: Indigenous Perspectives Designation (IPD) for our programs to provide students with knowledge of Indigenous peoples and their contributions to a vocation of study, a steady increase in self-identified Indigenous faculty and staff, and dedicated Indigenous representation on Fleming’s Board of Governors supported by the Terms of Reference.

“Shtaataahaa! Being chosen as the silver recipient of CICan’s Indigenous Education Award of Excellence is a great way to honour the work and dedication of Fleming staff and students. The commitment to reconciliation and creating authentic opportunities to learn and support students has shone through. Niishin!” said Liz Stone, Academic Chair, Indigenous Perspectives at Fleming College.

CICan Awards of Excellence were presented on April 26 during the 2021 CONNECTION Virtual Conference.
