Five Reasons Why You Should Attend Open House at Fleming College

Published

Choosing the right college is a big decision, especially if you’ve never even set foot inside the schools you’re considering. Open House helps make that choice a little bit easier by allowing you to “test drive” your options. It’s an opportunity to see the spaces you will learn in, meet the faculty who will support your learning, and get a feel for the school’s community and culture.

Still not sure if you should attend? Here are five reasons we think Open House is a must:

1) See the campus in real life

Forget scrolling photos. Wander the halls, step into labs and studios, check out the gym, and hunt down the best study nooks. You’ll get a real feel for where you’ll spend late-night study sessions and early-morning coffee runs.

Pro tip: Make a quick photo checklist: coolest lab, comfiest lounge, best view.

2) Talk to real humans (and get real answers)

Professors, program coordinators, admissions officers, current students – they’re all there, and they’re friendly. Ask what classes are actually like, how heavy the workload is, and which first-year projects people still brag about. Now is the time to ask the questions you couldn’t find answers to online.

Pro tip: Bring one sharp question per program: “What skill helps first-year students thrive?”

3) Try before you apply (hands-on demos!)

Open House isn’t a “look, don’t touch” situation. Many programs run demonstrations, simulations, or gear showcases, so you can see (and sometimes try) the tools you’ll use. If you’re a “learn by doing” person, this is your playground.

Pro tip: Notice what makes you go “whoa.” That spark = a great sign you’re considering the right program.

4) One stop for all the adulting stuff

From accepting your offer to registering for classes, applying OSAP/financial aid, finding housing, and accessing student supports, there are many important steps to start your Fleming journey. Instead of navigating these tasks with 37 browser tabs open on your laptop, you can get clear, personalized answers in one day. Walk in with curiosity, walk out with dates, deadlines, and a plan.

Pro tip: Screenshot your questions beforehand. Checking them off feels ridiculously satisfying.

5) Meet your future community

Clubs, teams, wellness support, tutoring, Indigenous supports, accessibility services, the local scene; it’s all part of your day-to-day life at college. Open House gives you an inside look at what your Fleming experience can be.

Pro tip: Introduce yourself to at least one club you may join or service you think you’ll use. It’s an easy first “hello.”

Make the most of your visit

  • Map your must-sees: Pick 3–5 programs/booths to hit first.
  • Take quick notes: Use a simple note app on your phone to keep track of information, questions, and deadlines.
  • Bring a buddy: Whether it’s a parent, friend, or sibling, second opinions from someone who knows you deeply are instrumental in decision-making.
  • Dress comfortably: You’ll be walking, talking, and taking it all in, so you may as well do it in comfort!

Bottom line: Open House = clarity + confidence (and a little adventure). Visit, explore, ask questions, and see if Fleming feels like home.
