Faculty Strike at Ontario Colleges

Published

March 17, 2022 – The college faculty union (OPSEU) has announced their intention to begin a full strike at all Ontario colleges on Friday, March 18, 2022.

On Monday, March 14, the OPSEU academic employees representing full-time and partial-load professors, instructors, librarians, and counsellors have given notice that they will withdraw their services starting a full walk-out strike on Friday, March 18, 2022 if no resolution is reached by that time. Bargaining is scheduled to resume on Thursday, March 17, 2022.

Should there be a change in the status of the potential strike, we will share that on our website and through social media as soon as details are available.

We have provided updates and links to more information below. While we cannot predict the developments over the next few days, we will do all we can to keep our community informed and supported.

Updates

The College Employer Council provides bargaining updates to all Ontario Colleges. The latest Bargaining FAQs and Voting FAQs are now available on the CEC website at https://www.collegeemployercouncil.ca/en.

More information is also available on the CEC’s website and the OPSEU website.

Strike Mandate Vote

The academic bargaining unit representing full-time and partial-load professors, instructors, librarians and counsellors participated in a strike mandate vote from December 9 to 11, 2021. After the three days of voting, the members voted 59.4 per cent in favour of a strike mandate.

This means that the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), the union that represents all full-time and partial-load faculty at all Ontario colleges will be in a legal strike position as of 12:01 a.m. on December 18, 2021.

The strike mandate does not mean that a strike will happen automatically. The CEC has asked that OPSEU provide the colleges with five days’ notice if they intend to take their membership out on strike.
