sustainable-peterboroughFleming College Student Administrative Council (S.A.C.) took home the Sustainable Peterborough Transportation Award for their efforts in sustainability this past year.

The Sustainable Peterborough Partnership Recognition Awards recognize the achievements of its partners for their efforts in sustainability. On Thursday, April 20, Sustainable Peterborough hosted the second annual awards ceremony, honouring 11 winners. Fleming College S.A.C. won in the transportation category for their accomplishments in 2016.

“It means a lot to us that the students of Fleming College are recognized for their efforts in creating a sustainable transportation program that helps not only students at Fleming, but also the community. We will continue to strive to be leaders in sustainable transportation now and into the future,” said Joel Willett, President of Fleming College S.A.C.

In September 2016, Fleming S.A.C. implemented a Transportation Program to support access to affordable transportation and help reduce the college’s carbon footprint. The Transportation Program features a Universal Bus Pass with increased routes and route frequency, bike repair stations and enhancements to the Sutherland Campus cycling infrastructure, a partnership with Zagster and the City of Peterborough to offer a commercial bike loan program; and the launch of FlemingRideShare.ca for students and staff to find a safe carpool, cycling, walking and/or transit buddy.

“We are thrilled to see Fleming S.A.C. recognized for their leadership efforts in sustainable transportation!” said Trish O’Connor, Director of the Office of Sustainability. “Improving the use of alternative transportation by our staff and students is a key pillar of the College’s Sustainability Plan, and when we improve transportation options for our campuses it often opens up alternative transportation for our communities as well.”
