Scholarships and Bursaries
Agnes Assinger was born in a small, rural village in Austria in 1905. When she was 16 years old she left home to attend a school for training in food preparation and service. As part of her training she apprenticed in restaurants in Udine and Tarvis in Italy and in Vienna, Austria.
In 1929 she immigrated to Canada with her husband, just in time for the Great Depression. The skills she had learned served her well and she was able to find work with wealthy families as cook and housekeeper until she and her husband bought their own home in the early 1940s. She still helped her former employees when they had large dinner parties.
At the same time she raised her daughter and looked after her own rooming house, which she kept until she died in 1993 at the age of 88. Agnes was a wonderful cook, and her unrealized dream what to have a little restaurant of her own where she could do what she loved most- cook for people who loved good food.
The Agnes Assinger Bursary Fund has been established to help other people realize a similar dream.
