Faculty: Deb Cockerton
I am so happy to be part of the faculty here at Fleming College in the CYC program.
I am a graduate of the Behavioural Science Technology program of St. Lawrence College. My last college placement was in a CYC role and I fell in love! I recognised the CYC’s ability to make connections and establish relationships to help children and youth, and I’ve never looked back. I am a proud member of the Ontario Association of Child and Youth Counsellors.
That journey started 40 years ago at an assessment and receiving centre in Calgary and has included working as a CYC in schools, group homes, hospital, community and humanitarian agencies. I am published In the Journal of Child and Youth Care and have written many articles for magazines pertaining to our work in the field. I have presented at CYC conferences in 5 provinces and two countries for provincial, national and international Child and Youth Care professionals.
Recently, I became a Trainer for DLE http://www.transformaction.com/dle_training.html and also teach some of this curriculum at Fleming. My other teachings include Therapeutic Interventions l and ll and I am the field practicum supervisor for second year students.
I founded a website http://cycassets.ca/ that offers webinars to those who work in the field to enhance their on-gong professional development. My app, CYC PD Tracker is a tool to keep track of webinars, workshops, self-study, and trainings pertaining to our domains of practice. My years of CYC experience led me to open my private practice in Peterborough, and this enables me to work front line with children, youth and families.
In my spare time, I practice self-care by reading, swimming, watching Netflix, gardening and travelling. I am in the process of writing a novel based upon supernatural events.
I look forward to another year at Fleming and am so excited to share in your CYC journey!
