Pastel Painting - Ontario Landscapes

This workshop is for SOFT pastel technique. NO oil pastels, please.

• An assortment of both softer and harder soft pastels in colours suitable for painting landscapes (blue, green, red, orange, yellow, turquoise and purple in light, dark, cool and warm versions). Rembrandt and Nupastels are some of the harder brands. Unison, Terry Ludwig, Great American Artworks, Sennelier, and Mount Vision are examples of softer brands. We will use harder pastels for the underpainting and paint the rest with softer pastels. If you are new to soft pastels, you will be doing most of your work with harder pastels.
• UART grit 320, 400 or 500 SANDED pastel paper. Off-white colour only. Sizes 9X12 or 12x18. 1-2 sheets per day. Could be purchased on Amazon.ca or DeSerres Art Supplies store (in person and online) or Above Ground. Premier Sanded pastel paper is good too. It is important to bring sanded paper as it will have to take many layers of pastels.
• At least 5-10 sheets of foam board (preferably black) to mount pastel paper on. I buy mine in Dollarama. Should be large enough to allow a few extra inches of border all around pastel paper.
• Masking tape for mounting paper on board (black preferred, but white is ok too).
• Easel (full-size foldable easel for plein air painting).
• Rubbing Alcohol 70-99%.
• Really small container for rubbing alcohol
• Bristle brush for underpainting size 8-10
• 1Paper towels
• Gloves to protect hands when painting (optional)
• Aluminum foil to use as a tray to collect pastel dust.
• Apron (optional)
• Notebook/Sketchbook
• Pencil or charcoal for sketching
• Eraser, pencil sharpener
• Wipes to clean hands
• Photographs if prefer to use own reference material

Mandatory Studio Safety Practices

Your health and safety are our priorities. Our studio environments can have a number of objects, tools and chemicals that require personal protective equipment (PPE) or other considerations for your well-being. All persons (including faculty, staff and students) are asked to observe the following while in the shops and studios:

• Wear sturdy and appropriate shoes such as sneakers, closed leather shoes or work boots. Open-toed shoes, flip-flops or high heels are not allowed
• No long, dangling clothing or accessories (scarves, flowing sleeves, chains, long necklaces, etc).
• Long hair must be tied back
• No bare skin if exposure to chemicals or tools/machinery is likely
• Appropriate PPE is mandatory when operating tools and equipment within the studios.
• Please consult with the faculty or studio technician to determine the appropriate PPE required for specific machines and studio processes.

Fit tests are required for courses requiring a respirator, as noted on your material list. Arrangements will be made on-site. As these are mandatory safety practices, we will follow up directly with students who may have oversighted the above. Individuals may be asked to address any concerns before continuing to work in the studio. Be sure to buy appropriate, good-quality safety articles and equipment, i.e. safety boots, protective eyewear, hearing protection, work gloves, x-acto knives, etc. - ask your supplier for advice.
